Interview with the Vampire

Read Our Review

AMC+ may not have too many originals, but the ones it does have are all worth seeing. Case in point, Interview with the Vampire, a televised series based on Anne Rice’s famous novel, The Vampire Chronicles. The series is framed as a recollection of events by the immortal vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) as he tells his life story to Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) in the modern day. Having lived for more than a century by this point, Louis dives deep into his past relationship with Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), but his reliability as a narrator ultimately comes into question as Daniel listens to more of his story.

A Vampire Story With Plenty of Bite

This gothic horror series is perfect for vampire lovers and those who enjoy the works of Anne Rice, with this adaptation in particular leaning more into the LGBT elements found in the original novel. Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid are excellent in their respective roles, portraying a layered relationship that isn’t afraid to tackle heavier themes and uncomfortable subjects. Likewise, Rolin Jones, whose television credits include everything from Boardwalk Empire to Weeds, performs amicably behind the scenes as the series’ showrunner. Those who are already invested in AMC’s Mayfair Witches will also love to know that this series resides within the same universe.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

Much like the zombies featured in this long-running franchise, The Walking Dead refuses to die. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, thankfully, throws a wrench into the typical formula found in this franchise by reuniting two of its most popular characters. Set after the end of the original series, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) find themselves separated by impenetrable forces, leading them into a bloodstained love story against impossible odds. Pollyanna McIntosh, Terry O’Quinn, Lesley-Ann Brandt, and Seth Gilliam co-star in this limited series.

Back from the Dead Once More

Though this series began life as a feature-length movie, it’s safe to say that the shift to the miniseries format did it more than a few favors. The Ones Who Live has been lauded as one of the best extensions of the Walking Dead universe to date, balancing emotional stakes and a tense atmosphere with fantastic action. It’s worth noting that this miniseries was co-created by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira themselves, along with Scott M. Gimple, who served as a showrunner for the original Walking Dead series. While there won’t be a second season anytime soon, this standalone miniseries is still worth watching.

Dark Winds

If you’ve already binged through Reservation Dogs, there’s another unique Native American series that deserves your attention. AMC’s Dark Winds originally premiered in 2022 with a total of two seasons currently available. Set in the American southwest sometime in the 1970s, Dark Winds adapts the Leaphorn & Chee series of novels by Tony Hillerman, depicting a pair of Navajo police officers taking on criminal cases in a tense thriller series. Dark Winds is notable for featuring a writing room made entirely of Native American writers, with Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon also playing Leaphorn and Chee respectively. If you’re already all caught up, you’ll be happy to know Dark Winds has been renewed for a third season.

Dark Winds Is a Compelling Crime Procedural

If you were a fan of Longmire, or simply want a grittier take on the Western thriller genre, Dark Winds is a terrific series to check out. The series’ incorporation of Native American history and culture has been a unique point of praise, differentiating it from its contemporaries in a compelling way. Combine that with a police procedural framework, and you end up with one of the best thrillers currently streaming.

Ren Faire

When you think of a renaissance festival, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Colorful costumes? Giant turkey legs? A tense power struggle? HBO’s Ren Faire chronicles the true story behind the Texas Renaissance Festival, originally helmed by founder George Coulam. As Coulam considers his eventual retirement, the ensuing power vacuum threatens to suck everyone into a world of lies, deception, and some of the most bizarre stories you’ll see this year.

A Bizarre Documentary Series

Produced by the Safdie brothers, Ren Faire is easily one of the most eclectic and intriguing documentaries of 2024 so far. Dramatic reenactments combined with exaggerated personas make for a story that’s seemingly stranger than fiction, highlighting the weird and wild players in an already niche festival. It’s not necessarily as wild as something like Tiger King, but it’s one that’ll hit some familiar notes at a third of Tiger King’s length.

House of the Dragon

The long-awaited prequel to Game of Thrones is back yet again for its second season. House of the Dragon, co-created by Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin, is set two centuries prior to the events of Game of Thrones, depicting the rise and tragic fall of House Targaryen as an internal battle for succession threatens to tear everything apart. Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Rhys Ifans, and more make up the many members of House Targaryen.

Game of Thrones in All Its Glory

For those worried about the involvement of David Benioff and D. B. Weiss after the disastrous last season of Game of Thrones, you’ll be happy to know that they’re nowhere near this stellar prequel series. A fresh direction combined with a terrific cast and multiple Emmy wins — including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, and Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) — makes House of the Dragon not only a terrific fantasy series, but a worthy continuation of what was once an iconic pop culture staple. Ramin Djawadi, the acclaimed composer for Game of Thrones, has also returned to score House of the Dragon as well.

It’ll Make You Smile

Smiling Friends is arguably one of the most unique Adult Swim shows in years. Those who are immersed in internet culture and fondly remember the era of flash animation will recognize Smiling Friends‘ many, many cameo appearances and guest roles. The show’s impressive dedication to multimedia animation is also highly welcomed, integrating 3D character models, stop-motion figures, live-action actors, rotoscoped characters, and more in each episode. It’s a series that isn’t afraid to try just about anything, making the overall viewing experience a thrill with every new episode.

This comedic drama co-created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, returned for its third season on Max recently, with a fourth season entering production shortly thereafter. Hacks follows what happens when a famous stand-up comedian, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), teams up with a disgraced comedy writer, Ava (Hannah Einbinder), in order to mutually bolster their careers. What starts out as a professional relationship, however, eventually blossoms into a friendship that may eventually put the two against each other. Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Megan Stalter, Paul W. Downs, and Rose Abdoo also star in this enchanting series.

A Lauded Max Dramedy

With a stellar cast, including the likes of Kaitlin Olson and Christopher McDonald, as well as a bevy of guest stars, Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder easily carry Hacks with their convincing relationship and individual performances. The series has also been a critical success ever since its initial debut, winning multiple Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series throughout its modest run so far. Though it may have debuted when Max was named “HBO Max,” there’s still plenty of longevity left in Hacks.

While acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook has dabbled in the world of television a few times now, The Sympathizer marks the only series he co-created exclusively for the format. Along with the creative input of Don McKellar, The Sympathizer is a Vietnam War period drama that follows the Captain (Hoa Xuande), a man in the South Vietnam army who is secretly an agent for the other side. While taking refuge in the United States within a South Vietnamese community, the Captain finds himself caught between two worlds as his multiple lives come into conflict. Robert Downey Jr. appears in this series as well, playing multiple roles throughout.

A Strange But Captivating A24 Series

Whenever A24 is backing a project, you can expect something a little unconventional. Even going beyond how Robert Downey Jr. plays not one, not two, but four separate characters in The Sympathizer, this engaging black comedy brings plenty to the table that you won’t typically find elsewhere on streaming, let alone on Max. Fans of Park Chan-wook’s work will love to know that he co-wrote each and every episode of this limited series on top of directing the first three episodes. It also received two award nominations at the Gotham TV Awards: one for Breakthrough Limited Series, and one for Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series.

Want to get an idea of what Superman: Legacy will be like in 2025? You’re in luck, as My Adventures With Superman has quickly become a favorite among DC fans. A fresh and energized take on the Man of Steel, My Adventures with Superman returns to a more colorful and less stoic version of everyone’s favorite Kryptonian. But, as he takes on the public persona of Clark Kent, investigative reporter Lois Lane and photographer Jimmy Olsen may ultimately uncover his secret identity. Following the success of its first season, the second season will air throughout the rest of June.

A Fresh, Inspired Take on the Man of Steel

Taking visual inspiration from Japanese anime, it’s safe to say that My Adventures with Superman is a series that can be enjoyed by all ages. It’s a long overdue reimagining that perfectly coincides with the brand-new direction that the DCU is turning toward. The incredible animation by Studio Mir (The LEgend of Korra, X-Men ’97) is also a genuine treat to look at. Suffice to say, if you weren’t a fan of the Snyderverse, this colorful adaptation is more up your alley.

Conan O’Brien Must Go

Though Max has plenty of reality shows nowadays, one in particular stands out among the rest. Conan O’Brien Must Go follows the eponymous late-night host as he pursues a brand-new avenue of entertainment: international travel. A dedicated follow-up series to his one-off Conan Without Borders specials, Conan O’Brien Must Go follows Conan as he ventures out across the world, exploring new cultures and enjoying the delights of international tourism. That said, he brings his classic sense of humor and hilarious awkwardness along with him. The series spans a total of four episodes so far, with an additional season currently in development.

An Irreverent Travel Series

If you’re looking for a bog-standard travel series that simply explores the world as it is, you may want to look elsewhere. Conan approaches countries like Norway, Ireland, and Thailand with the same kind of irreverent and aloof behavior you’d come to expect from his classic stint on late-night. Instead of coming off as disrespectful, however, it makes for some incredible comedy. The humor comes less from Conan mocking the places he visits, and more from his own ignorance and apprehension about adapting to local customs. If you’re sick of conventional travel shows, you’ll find a lot to love in Conan O’Brien Must Go.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Fans of Larry David’s long-running HBO staple, Curb Your Enthusiasm, will be saddened to know that the series is finally coming to a close with its latest season. That being said, there’s no better time to check out his incredibly hilarious show for the first time, if you’ve never given it a chance. Depicting a purposefully exaggerated caricature of Larry David, Curb Your Enthusiasm puts David against just about anyone and anything you can think of, as minor annoyances and inconveniences are taken to uncomfortable extremes more often than not. Let’s not forget that time Larry David attacked Elmo.

A Classic HBO Comedy

Curb Your Enthusiasm has been an iconic piece of HBO programming for years, existing for almost a quarter of a century across over 200 episodes. Its unique sense of humor made possible via extensive improvisation and hilariously absurd situations makes it one of the best examples of cringe comedy you’ll ever see on television, with Larry David’s increasingly hostile personality over the years making each successive season better than the last.

Originally debuting in 2014, True Detective made a significant splash for more than a few reasons. Now that the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, has wrapped up its run, there’s no better time to catch up on this fantastic anthology series. That’s right, this crime drama is an anthology, with each season telling an incredible self-contained narrative with distinct casting and characters. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson famously co-starred in the first season, with future seasons featuring talented names like Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Jodie Foster, and Kali Reis.

True Detective ls Truly Captivating

The nature of the anthology format means some seasons will be hit-or-miss, but miraculously, True Detective manages to incorporate unique ideas into each installment. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto’s vision is carried throughout, and though showrunning duties for the fourth season are officially in the hands of Issa López, Pizzolato is still onboard as a producer. Everyone ranks each season of True Detective differently, with the latest season in particular being a particularly polarizing one. Whether you enjoy it or not, every season has something captivating to bring to the table.

The Gilded Age was a fascinating period in United States history, making it ample material for a compelling historical drama. This HBO series was created by Julian Fellowes, the very same Julian Fellowes responsible for creating the award-winning series Downton Abbey. The Gilded Age tells the collective stories of those living in New York in the 1880s, as sociopolitical conflicts between the established members of the upper class began to ramp up. You’ll also get the perspective of those less financially well-off as well. Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Taissa Farmiga, Louisa Jacobson, Harry Richardson, and more are attached to the series’ cast.

The Gilded Age Is an Authentic Period Series

The GIlded Age‘s acclaim isn’t reserved just for its individual performances, though they are certainly impressive. A dedication to preserving historical accuracy, specifically recreating notable events from the period, has been a significant point of praise. The production design found in the first season would even snag an Emmy Award in 2022, demonstrating The Gilded Age’s ability to paint a historically accurate depiction of its setting. Of course, Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector, among others, do a fantastic job as the series’ leads, as well.

David E. Kelley returns to streaming with a brand-new legal series starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Based on an original novel by Scott Turow, Presumed Innocent sees Gyllenhaal playing the role of Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor whose life quickly spirals out of control. After being accused of murder, Rusty becomes the central suspect, forcing him into a battle to prove his innocence while his circle of colleagues starts giving him the side-eye.

Being Gyllenhaal’s first-ever miniseries role, Presumed Innocent allows him to shine via his wide range of emotions and iconic intensity. Ruth Negga and Bill Camp do an excellent job as well, with Peter Sarsgaard, Lily Rabe, Matthew Alan, and Virginia Kull making for an excellent surrounding cast. Some have even described it as one of the most entertaining legal thrillers to hit streaming in years. Anne Sewitsky, who is attached as a director on the series, is also notable for directing the Black Mirror episode “Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too.”

Dark Matter

Dark Matter

Read Our Review

Not to be confused with the 2015 series of the same name, Dark Matter is Apple TV+’s latest and greatest series, adapting the titular 2016 novel by Blake Crouch. The series follows Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), an ordinary physics professor living with his wife and son in Chicago. However, after being abducted by a mysterious force, Jason makes a terrifying realization: his assailant is an alternate version of himself. Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley co-star in this intense science fiction series.

Another Stellar Apple TV+ Science Fiction Series

Dark Matter is yet another intriguing science fiction series on a streaming service that’s seemingly swimming in them. That’s not a bad thing, though. Joel Edgerton does a stellar job as the series’ central lead, and its intriguing premise allows for the exploration of harrowing alternate universes. Even though the series strays from the book in some places, the changes made can be interpreted as an overall positive.

Read Our Review

Though many consider Band of Brothers to be the best series about war, the numerous companion series that have been released since its conclusion have only added to its sprawling exploration of World War II. Take Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air, for instance. From the perspective of the 100th Bomb Group, a dedicated bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force, we watch as Gale Cleven (Austin Butler) leads his soldiers to victory through a litany of dangerous missions over the skies of occupied Europe. Like Band of Brothers, there’s an effort made to showcase both the horrors of war and the scant peace that can be found within it via forged friendships.

Band of Brothers Takes to the Skies

With an ensemble cast comprised of immense talent, including the likes of Anthony Boyle, Callum Turner, Sawyer Spielberg, and Isabel May, this historical miniseries shoots for the skies in terms of characterization and storytelling. In collaboration with Apple Studios, both Amblin Television and Playtone — who developed the original Band of Brothers series in addition to The Pacific — bring a similar level of production polish to the series as well.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is an essential series for kaiju fans. Set in the same universe as 2014’s Godzilla, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters sees a pair of siblings digging deep into the origins of the mysterious Monarch organization following Godzilla’s siege of San Francisco. When they try to see how far the rabbit hole goes, they’ll uncover a legacy of secrets that may prove the monolithic “Titans” have been kicking around for far longer than anyone could’ve expected. Anna Sawai and Ren Watabe play our pair of siblings, with additional performances by Kiersey Clemons, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Chris Black and Matt Fraction co-created this monstrous series in addition to writing a handful of episodes.

Legacy of Monsters Expands the Monsterverse

For those who can’t get enough of the Monsterverse, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is an appropriate continuation with some fantastic production design behind the scenes. Some critics have noted that the series’ focus on gigantic creatures is given an emotional core via our human protagonists, a feature that strongly benefits from its formatting as a series. This allows for the development of a compelling narrative, while also expanding the intrigue of the Titans as a whole.

For an exclusive interview with Ren Watabe, Anna Sawai, and Kiersey Clemons, be sure to check out our video below:

Slow Horses

Slow Horses

Read Our Review

Spy thrillers continue to be a thrilling staple of streaming programming, with Apple TV+’s Slow Horses being a particularly excellent example. Following the recent conclusion of Season 3, there’s no better time to give this series a shot. Based on the similarly-titled Slough House series of books by Mick Herron, Slow Horses follows a dysfunctional branch of MI5 as they’re relegated to desk jobs and endless paperwork. Whether through pure luck or brave initiative, this group of rejected special agents finds itself tasked with saving Britain on more than a handful of occasions. Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, and Kristin Scott Thomas make up the main cast of this delightful espionage series.

Slow Horses Is a Spirited Spy Series

With each season adapting a separate story from Mick Herron’s series, you can expect a concise journey from start to finish, with each season wrapping up in a measly six episodes each. Near-universal acclaim has been dished out to this series for its impeccable performances, especially from an authoritative Gary Oldman. Of course, its brisk pacing leaves little room for unnecessary fluff as well, making more time for terrific spy-thriller action.

For All Mankind

For All Mankind

What if the global space race never ended? The question is answered on Apple TV+’s For All Mankind, an alternate history science fiction series that originally debuted in 2019. Set in an alternate timeline that saw the Soviet Union touch down on the moon before the United States, the Land of the Free is forced to catch up with its rival across the globe. Each season takes place a full decade after the last. For example, the latest season, Season 4, takes place in the early 2000s. The series’ massive cast includes the likes of Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Sarah Jones, Shantel VanSanten, Jodi Balfour, Wrenn Schmidt, and Sonya Walger.

For All Mankind Spans Decades

Aside from featuring a fun premise, For All Mankind takes extra care in presenting its historical scenarios in an authentic way. This is accomplished through the incorporation of prominent figures like Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Sally Ride, Jimmy Carter, and Ted Kennedy. Science fiction fans should also know that Ronald D. Moore – famous for his work on Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica – co-created this series with Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi. It’s a fantastic show for space enthusiasts of all kinds, and knowing that a total of seven seasons are planned out, you can expect a conclusive finale in the coming years.

Apple TV+ continues to be a home for unconventional streaming shows. That being said, this kind of unbridled creativity has led to some pretty surprising projects. Lessons in Chemistry joins this streamer’s offerings by adapting the titular 2022 novel by Bonnie Garmus. Brie Larson stars as the intelligent 1960s chemist Elizabeth Zott, a woman who is unfortunately ousted from her own laboratory by her male cohorts. Desperate to continue her practice, Zott comes up with a brilliant idea. She opts to star in a cooking show, albeit one laced with scientific education for the hundreds of viewers tuning in.

Brie Larson Is a Perfect Fit for Lessons in Chemistry

Aside from its authentic production values, which craft a genuine depiction of the 1960s, Brie Larson perfectly fits into the staunch role of Elizabeth Zott. Aja Naomi King puts on a similar clinic in her role as Harriet, marking her return to television after her run on ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder. Lee Eisenberg, the mind behind the critically-beloved Jury Duty on Freevee, is also onboard as an executive producer. It’s a fantastic miniseries that would go on to receive two Golden Globe nominations, one for Best Limited or Anthology Series, and one for Best Actress in a Miniseries for Brie Larson.

Shows that capitalize on nostalgia come and go, but X-Men ’97 is one of those select few exceptions that really takes things up a notch. Arguably one of Disney+’s most highly anticipated and hyped series, X-Men ’97 is the long-awaited follow-up to the beloved ’90s X-Men series of the same name. Taking place immediately after the events of the original series, X-Men ’97 follows what happens when the X-Men — a group of mutant superheroes — are suddenly left without a leader following the near-death of Professor Charles Xavier. Now under the command of Magneto, they’ll have to save the world while tackling a plethora of inner turmoils and earth-shattering conflicts.

A Perfect Nostalgic Series

To say that X-Men ’97 knocked our socks off is an understatement. A true love letter to fans of the original series as well as the X-Men franchise as a whole, X-Men ’97 has plenty to love in as little as a single season thus far. Returning cast members like Alison Sealy-Smith, Lenore Zann, George Buza, and Chris Potter join the likes of Jennifer Hale and Ray Chase in bringing these stunning superheroes to life, with a modernized rendition of the show’s iconic theme blaring out slick guitar tones once more. Critical acclaim has been showered upon X-Men ’97 since it debuted, with more seasons currently in production.

A spinoff of Hawkeye, Echo drew significant attention for its status as the first “Marvel Spotlight” series, its ties to several Marvel shows originally produced for Netflix, and its simultaneous premiere on both Disney+ and Hulu. The series focuses on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka the titular “Echo,” as she resigns from her life in the Tracksuit Mafia in order to reconnect with her past. To do so, she returns to her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma, where she may find more than she originally bargained for.

Echo Is an Important Marvel Series

After a shaky beginning, Echo quickly found its footing by presenting a refreshingly grounded Marvel story. The utilization of characters from the beloved shows originally produced for Netflix, including Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, as well as popular Native American actors like Chaske Spencer and Zahn McClarnon, gives the series some distinct qualities when compared to other projects produced for Phase Five of the MCU. After all, it’s also the first MCU series to air with a TV-MA rating. This series is hopefully a sign of good things to come in the future, with the events depicted here tying directly into the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again.

After the death of his brother, Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) is forced to take over the restaurant, only to realize that his brother’s death left more than just an empty kitchen behind. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, and Matty Matheson also co-star alongside White.

An Intense Culinary Drama

On top of gaining approval from those in the restaurant industry, this critically-acclaimed FX drama has seen its fair share of accolades elsewhere. For one thing, its first season earned a whopping 10 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Its intense drama, incredible camera work, and outstanding individual performances — which also won several Emmys — make this fantastic culinary drama series worth watching. Season 3 of The Bear is currently slated to premiere on June 23.

American Horror Story

american horror story

American Horror Story‘s latest season, Delicate, wrapped up as of April 2024, meaning there’s ample time to catch up on this memorable anthology series. Co-created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk of Glee and Scream Queens fame, American Horror Story is a series that tells a unique, mostly self-contained story with each successive season. Though cast members may be repurposed for other stories, including series mainstays Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, each season ventures into wildly different territory. Some may be homages to the slasher genre, some may take inspiration from real events, and others, like Delicate, may wholly adapt an existing property.

A Horror-Themed Variety Show

American Horror Story is a series that’s sure to please. The variety found in its many seasons, with the individual plots in each being as wild as they are, amounts to some incredibly entertaining viewing sessions if you’re in the right mood. It’s a series that also served as a jumping off point for some incredible talent, notably the aforementioned Evan Peters and even Kim Kardashian, who made her scripted television debut in Delicate. Jessica Lange would even win two Primetime Emmy Awards for her performances in the series’ first four seasons.

Shogun

Shogun

Read Our Review

Shogun is easily one of the most acclaimed television shows of the year, which speaks volumes about how effectively it tackled its subject. Based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, Shogun follows John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a seaworthy British adventurer who inadvertently washes up on the shores of Japan. Now caught in a land beyond his understanding, Blackthorne is swept up into the geopolitical tensions of the region as Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) enlist his aid.

An Acclaimed American-Japanese Series

Being set in Japan, a majority of the series’ dialogue is Japanese, adding to the barrier between Blackthorne and his new surroundings. While this could’ve been a recipe for disaster, special care was taken to not only ensure that the language could be understood via subtitles, but that the subtitles themselves were unobtrusive and integrated into the viewing experience. Because of this, you have a series that not only recreates 1600s Japan with some incredible production and costume design, but one that does so with some incredible storytelling gusto and faithfulness to its source material. It was a ratings hit and critical success, guaranteeing more seasons in the future.

Abbott Elementary

Abbot Elementary

Abbott Elementary wrapped up its most recent season, meaning now is the perfect time to check this series out if you haven’t given it your attention. Created by Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary follows the operations of Abott Elementary, a struggling public school situated in Philadelphia. Brunson plays Janine Teagues, an optimistic teacher who braves the harsh conditions in order to help her students the best she can. She’s not without help, either. Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), and Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti) all chip in when they can, even though they face hurdles coming from all directions.

An Endearing Mockumentary

Along with an ensemble cast, Abbott Elementary has reviewed well over the course of its brief run, not only earning 15 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, but also several Golden Globe Awards. It holds an incredible 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with praise being heaped onto the series’ balance of genuine comedy and compelling situations in particular. It’s a series that works just as well as a critique of the public education system as it does a comedy, making it perfect for those in the profession and those outside of it alike.

The final season of Letterkenny has concluded, bringing 12 seasons of crass Canadian comedy to a climactic close. Based on the web series of the same name, Letterkenny follows the ongoing misadventures of the titular Ontario community, with Jared Keeso, Nathan Dales, Michelle Mylett, and K. Trevor Wilson making up the main quartet. The series immediately took off for its incredible wordplay, deliberate subversion of rural stereotypes, raunchy humor, and its memorable characters. A spinoff series, Shoresy, also features Keeso in the title role, and is currently ongoing.

Letterkenny’s Is Laugh-Out-Loud Funny

Owing to its roots as a web series, Letterkenny is incredibly quippy and infectiously memorable. While the comparisons to the similar Canadian series Trailer Park Boys are all but inevitable, Letterkenny crafts a hilarious niche for itself with its own diverse cast and unique storylines. With its low episode count per season, it’s a series you can also quickly binge through to its completion.

Welcome to Wrexham

Welcome to Wrexham

Welcome to Wrexham is a series seemingly tailor-made for soccer fans, complete with two recognizable faces as its central protagonists. If you weren’t aware, this series follows the operations of the titular Wrexham football club under their American co-owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, while documenting the team’s ups and downs throughout the season. Though the team’s owners initially know little about the sport itself, jokes are often pushed to the wayside for a genuinely compelling reality series, complete with a humble team you can’t help but root for.

An Unconventional Underdog Story

This FX sports series took just about everyone by surprise, not only portraying Reynolds and McElhenney as charismatic underdogs but also showcasing how important the football club is for its surrounding community. The series often takes time to highlight the culture surrounding Wrexham, along with the difficulties of running the team behind the scenes. If you want a more intimate look at the world of soccer after finishing up Ted Lasso, Welcome to Wrexham is as close as you’re going to get.

Though Season 3 deviates from the original comic substantially, its changes are ultimately suitable for the story.

Scavenger’s Reign

Scavengers Reign MAX TV Poster

It’s not often you see a show on one streaming service jump to another, but in the case of Scavengers Reign, it may have been for the better. The series follows what happens when the occupants of an interstellar ship crash onto an isolated planet. Split into three groups, we follow their mutual journeys across an alien planet as they each converge onto the remains of their vessel.

A Beautiful, Terrifying Series

Though Scavengers Reign may have been cast aside by Max, this incredible series offers plenty for fans of adult animation. Beautiful backdrops and character animation, convincing voice performances from actors like Sunita Mani and Bob Stephenson, and a perfect soundtrack composed by Nicolas Snyder accompany a series that evokes memories of Fantastic Planet and other acclaimed animated projects. Even if a second season doesn’t come to fruition, what’s there is already fantastic.

One Netflix show that drew up a significant amount of attention recently is also one of the service’s most intriguing ones yet. Created by Richard Gadd, Baby Reindeer sees Gadd starring as Donny Dunn, a fictionalized version of himself living in London. While he makes a living as a bartender, an opportunity to make a distressed woman happy with a free cup of tea unfortunately spirals into something beyond what Donny could’ve ever possibly imagined. Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill co-star in this thrilling series based on Gadd’s real-life experiences.

Based on a Shocking True Story

Though the shocking events of Baby Reindeer may be fictional, they’ll still catch you off guard. Donny’s experiences with harassment are a key theme here, and the series never shies away from showing a perspective on the subject that you’ll rarely find elsewhere. With only seven episodes, this brisk series easily topped the Netflix charts while securing several Gotham TV Awards nominations, including Outstanding Performance in a Limited Series and a win for Breakthrough Limited Series.

Did you ever think that the showrunners behind Game of Thrones could ever redeem themselves? After 3 Body Problem debuted on Netflix, there’s an argument to be made about that. Co-created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, and based on Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Liu Cixin, 3 Body Problem sees an astrophysicist conscripted into the Chinese military in the midst of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. However, what she does next sets the course for history to come. After making contact with an extraterrestrial presence on a remote military base, a group of modern-day scientists have to reap what was sown.

Netflix’s Next Big Science Fiction Hit

What is there to say about 3 Body Problem that hasn’t been said already? After a surprisingly warm reception by critics and audiences alike, it’s safe to say that this complex series defied expectations. Because of how dense and philosophical the source material is, ample effort was made into translating the book into a different medium, made all the more captivating by its stellar cast. Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Alex Sharp, and Benedict Wong are just a handful of names attached to this series’ sprawling cast, with other famous faces like CCH Pounder and Mark Gatiss playing reoccurring roles throughout. The series has already been officially renewed, despite some initial confusion surrounding the announcement.

Young Sheldon

Young Sheldon poster

This beloved spinoff to The Big Bang Theory focuses on the series’ most popular character, Sheldon Cooper. But while Young Sheldon could’ve ended up in the same forgotten pile as the Friends spinoff, Joey, there’s some genuinely compelling stuff going on here. We follow Sheldon throughout his childhood in Texas, as he’s already demonstrating his advanced intellect at a very young age. Even with his intelligence, however, he’ll have to navigate this coming-of-age story with the help of his loving family and his few professional colleagues. Ian Armitage plays the titular lead role, with Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, and Montana Jordan also attached to the cast.

A Fantastic Spinoff with an Emotional Sendoff

Young Sheldon is more than just a series fit for fans of The Big Bang Theory. Despite sharing more than just a few connections with its parent series — including the returning Jim Parsons — Young Sheldon works well as a standalone series as well, balancing the troubles of growing up with Sheldon Cooper’s memorable personality. Lance Barber also saw significant praise for his performance as Sheldon’s father, even if the series potentially introduces some potential continuity errors with Sheldon’s wider family.

An alternate history drama series at its core, Bridgerton follows what happens when King George III (James Fleet) opts to ratify racial equality following his marriage to Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), who is of African descent. The series follows the ensuing social season — a period in which the British elite mingle and attempt to build favor with other competing powers. Because of this series’ large scope, it’s notable for having a fantastic ensemble cast, spanning more than 25 central characters.

Bridgerton Is Alternate History Done Right

With an expansive scope, a complex set of connected relationships, and numerous Emmy award nominations, Bridgerton is a case of alternate history done right. While the series wouldn’t ultimately win the awards for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, its production design more than made up for it, securing the series a win for Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling. That, combined with an incredible level of viewership that persists to this very day, Bridgerton is an excellent watch that’s sure to stir up plenty of discussion around the water cooler. It even features some incredible classical covers of popular songs, featuring tracks by artists like Billie Eilish, Nirvana, and Sia.

Remember Seth MacFarlane’s Ted? The original film, which saw John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) befriending his sentient teddy bear, Ted (Seth MacFarlane), into adulthood, was a modest comedy hit when it debuted in 2012. It would later spawn a sequel, 2015’s Ted 2, in addition to this surprising Peacock series in 2024. What’s even more surprising is that it’s shockingly entertaining. A prequel to the films, Peacock’s Ted sees Max Burkholder playing a younger John Bennett in his late teens, as Ted’s foul-mouthed personality clashes with John’s life at school and at home. Alanna Ubach and Scott Grimes also star in this series.

Ted Is a Surprising Peacock Series

Ted is surprising in more ways than one. Each episode can run from anywhere between 34 and 51 minutes, its sense of humor sometimes gives way to some genuinely interesting story development, and the constant utilization of Ted himself – a character brought to life via VFX – is something of a rarity when it comes to streaming content in general, let alone on Peacock. Though some critics weren’t impressed, audience reception has been staggeringly positive, with some even comparing the series to the first few seasons of Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy.

Chucky

Chucky

Chucky is a comedy horror-drama television series from Child’s Play series creator Don Mancini and acts as a continuation of the film franchise. Set three weeks after Cult of Chucky, fourteen-year-old Jake Wheeler finds a Good Guy doll he intends to use for his school art project for Halloween – however, that doll is inhabited by the murderous spirit of Charles Lee Ray, A.K.A. Chucky. Casting suspicion on Jake following his murder spree, Chucky continues doing what he does best – slaying unsuspecting town residents as Jake and his friends try to stop his rampage.

Release Date
October 12, 2021

Everyone’s favorite killer doll is back, but as a full-on television series. Chucky – named after the titular doll from the Child’s Play franchise – acts as a sequel to 2017’s Cult of Chucky, with our murderous doll now in the hands of a teen named Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur). As Wheeler comes to terms with Chucky’s sadistic tendencies, he may find himself turning towards violence himself as he enters the terrifying world of adolescence. Don Mancini, the creator of Child’s Play, has a hand in almost every creative aspect of the series’ production.

Chucky Effortlessly Adapts Child’s Play Into a Series

Despite the change in format, Chucky is as true to the original Child’s Play films as can be. Brad Dourif returns once more to voice Chucky, in addition to Don Mancini giving the series his signature touch. Combine that with the escalating tensions that come to a terrifying head in Season 3, and you have a substantial continuation of the Child’s Play franchise. Suffice to say, horror enthusiasts will find plenty to like in this brief series.

Another exciting series by Taylor Sheridan takes you to the center of modern day Kingstown, Michigan. Mayor of Kingstown sees Jeremy Renner playing the role of Michael McLusky, the eponymous “mayor” of Kingstown, who serves as a go-between for the numerous criminal groups and corrupt officers that run the streets. As Michael and the surrounding McLusky family attempt to maintain order within the city, they may find themselves biting off more than they can chew. Dianne Wiest, Hugh Dillon, Taylor Handley, Emma Laird, Derek Webster, and Aidan Gillen co-star alongside Renner in this tense crime thriller.

Jeremy Renner’s Exciting Comeback

After recovering from a near-fatal accident, Jeremy Renner is back and better than ever in Mayor of Kingstown. Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, both famous for the Yellowstone franchise, manage to transplant their stellar writing into a series that differs wildly from their previous installments. While critical reviews may be mixed, audience reception as a whole has been positive overall, with Renner in particular being an engaging lead throughout.

Though this exciting series started life as a Paramount+ exclusive, you can also find it streaming on Netflix. Evil is a thrilling supernatural drama co-created by Robert and Michelle King, who previously rose to fame via The Good Wife and The Good Fight. The series follows a group of three specialists — Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), David Acosta (Mike Colter), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) — who each come from unique, conflicting backgrounds. The three are called upon by the Catholic Church in order to investigate supernatural phenomena, though they may find themselves being pulled deeper into these incidents if they’re not too careful.

A Surprise Hit

Though some have sung praises for Evil ever since it debuted in 2019, its wider accessibility via Netflix skyrocketed this series to the stars. Its intriguing blend of ensemble cast members, which blend skepticism, pragmatism, and faith in an unconventional combination, allows for its fascinating mysteries to unfold with plenty of suspenseful intrigue. For those who enjoyed Robert and Michelle King’s previous shows, or those who want a legitimate and thrilling series that tackles the supernatural, Evil is more than a worthy contender.

Halo

Halo

Though the dedicated series adaptation of Halo was initially met with mixed reception, to put things mildly, reviews for Halo Season 2 have seen a significant improvement. For those who don’t know, Halo is based on the long-running video game series of the same name, chronicling a futuristic war between the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) and the Covenant, a military alliance dead set on wiping humanity from existence. Utilizing a military program repurposed for fighting the Covenant, we follow the perspective of the Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber), a genetically-engineered super soldier who must navigate the dangerous battles both on the frontline and in his personal life.

Getting Better With Time

Compared to the mixed reception of the first season, Halo Season 2 has seen a notable improvement in reviews from both critics and casual audiences alike. The original Halo games built a reputation for having incredible lore that doesn’t see much focus in the games themselves, with this dedicated series offering an opportunity to explore specific story beats in an isolated timeline. That means you can enjoy this series in isolation from the main games as well.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves

Lawmen: Bass Reeves poster

Paramount+ continues its streak of period dramas with Lawmen: Bass Reeves. Originally meant to take place in the Yellowstone universe, this Western miniseries is now confirmed to exist within its own unique continuity. The series depicts the legendary life of Bass Reeves: the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshal stationed on the American frontier. David Oyelowo plays Bass Reeves, with Dennis Quaid, Joaquina Kalukango, Forrest Goodluck, Lauren E. Banks, and Donald Sutherland playing supporting roles. The series was created by Chad Feehan, with Taylor Sheridan of Yellowtone and Tulsa King attached as a producer.

Bass Reeves Brings a Western Legend to the Small Screen

Westerns in the age of streaming are few and far between. But what they lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. Lawmen: Bass Reeves looks to reach similar highs compared to Netflix’s Godless, with praise aimed at Oyelowo’s layered portrayal of Bass Reeves and Dennis Quaid’s equally captivating performance. The series’ grandiose scope and modern sensibilities give it a welcome edge when it comes to the few Western offerings you can currently find on streaming.

As he tries to secure a role as a professor at Harvard, Frasier moves into his son’s apartment while bringing his sense of class and etiquette with him.

Frasier Brings Back a Classic Series

Though we’re now without David Hyde Pierce and the late John Mahoney, it’s safe to say that this sitcom revival gets more things right than it does wrong. The role-reversal found in Frasier and Frederick’s relationship is compelling to watch, and the same kind of quick-witted wordplay that filled the original series is here in spades. It has been teased that future seasons may even feature the return of several characters from Cheers as Frasier acclimates to his old home.

With Season 4 on the way, The Boys promises yet another season of subversive superhero storytelling. Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic of the same name, The Boys presents a universe in which “supes” are idolized as celebrities just as much as they’re revered for being crime fighters. However, underneath the surface of their public-facing facade is a grim, seedy underbelly. Thus, the eponymous vigilante group, The Boys, are tasked with taking down various supes who pose a risk to the public. Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Star, and Erin Moriarty star in this series, with Jessie T. Usher, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, and Tomer Capone also attached to the cast.

A Gritty Take on Superheroes

Following his work on Supernatural, Eric Kripke not only adapted Ennis and Robertson’s comic, but significantly improved upon it. The shock value found in its source material is still found in spades, but refined storytelling, new plot elements, and adjusted pacing make for an adaptation that many consider to be superior to the original comics. Of course, its individual performances shine as well, with Antony Starr’s Homelander being one of the most menacing and hateable villains you’ll find in the superhero genre.

After what felt like decades, Prime Video’s Fallout series debuted to an unprecedented amount of critical acclaim. This is especially surprising when you learn that it’s actually based on a video game series. Taking after the titular franchise of the same name, Fallout takes place in an alternate timeline where 1950s retrofuturism clashed with a nuclear post-apocalypse. After the bombs dropped in 2077, those who took refuge in a series of bunkers provided by Vault-Tec managed to survive. A woman named Lucy (Ella Purnell) emerges from Vault 33 in order to find her father, but along the way, the horrors and delights of the wasteland will only make themselves more readily apparent.

A Post-Apocalyptic Treat

Fallout is a series that took the world by storm, not only reigniting its parent franchise’s popularity, but also building significant hype for its pending second season. It was one of the highest-viewed Prime Video originals since its debut, and when combined with the talents of Jonathan Nolan, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, and Todd Howard, it amounted to a breakout hit. If you even have the slightest interest in exploring the Fallout universe, this series deserves your attention.

Outer Range

Outer Range

One of Prime Video’s best series has finally returned after a lengthy two-year absence. Outer Range, a neo-Western series with science fiction elements, follows what happens when an average rancher makes a terrifying discovery in the midst of some family squabbles. As the Abbott family deals with the presence of a mysterious void on their property, the sudden disappearance of their daughter-in-law, Rebecca, and the advancement of the rival Tillerson family begins to threaten everything they hold dear. An ensemble cast consisting of Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, and Tom Pelphrey are predominantly featured in eclectic Western series.

A Long-Awaited Return

Outer Range made a significant splash back in 2022, and even two years later, it’s still going strong. Debuting the same year as Reacher, Outer Range blends gorgeous landscapes with an intriguing plot, taking its sweet time to fully explore its unique premise. It’s a series some have favorably compared to Yellowstone, but the differences between the two shows are way too numerous to count. It takes some fairly bold risks in melding complex family dynamics and intriguing science fiction concepts together, demanding your full attention for its brief runtime.

If you enjoyed the titular 2005 film by Doug Liman, Prime Video has a special surprise for you. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a 2024 series directly inspired by the film of the same name, with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine co-starring as John and Jane Smith. Despite both John and Jane joining a secret spy agency on their own accord, the two are paired up together in a false marriage in order to carry out their dedicated missions. However, with the stress of their dangerous occupation weighing on their minds, keeping up the perfect couple facade may ultimately prove to be their undoing.

Donald Glover’s Espionage Series

Co-created by Glover himself alongside Francesca Sloane, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is a terrific example of expanding upon an already intriguing idea. Glover and Erskine have fantastic chemistry together on-screen, adding some credence to their burgeoning relationship alongside some terrific spy action. You can also expect to see some high-profile talent filling out the series as well, with big names like Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd and Paul Dano filling out the series in guest roles. It’s a rare example of a reinterpretation outclassing the source material in a number of ways.

Reacher, based on the titular book series by Lee Child, has quickly become one of Prime Video’s most popular shows. Alan Ritchson of Smallville and Blue Mountain State becomes the eponymous former army officer. He has since turned to a nomadic life, leaving little behind and even less of a trace wherever he goes. Though he may have left the armed voices, trouble still seems to find him wherever he goes, as old connections and new threats force their way into his everyday life.

Reacher Took Off Immediately

Reacher‘s second season has eclipsed the viewership of its predecessor, with Alan Ritchson quickly becoming the spitting image of Lee Child’s nomadic problem solver. Being based on Lee Child’s respective novels allows each season to tell a strong, cohesive story, making it perfect for curious viewers and action-loving audiences everywhere. Some have even argued Ritchson’s performance surpassed Tom Cruise’s depiction of the character in the 2012 film. Though it quickly earned a reputation for being a “dad” TV show, it’s still wickedly entertaining from start to finish.

A Raunchy Adult Animated Musical Series

Hazbin Hotel is a lot of things. It’s incredibly stylish, with a distinct red and violet color palette that’s sure to make it stand out in Prime Video’s extensive streaming catalog. It’s incredibly raunchy, but it capitalizes on this by featuring inventive musical numbers and incredible singing talent. It even features some incredible voice performances, with Keith David, Stephanie Beatriz, and Kimiko Glenn playing key roles in the cast.
