The Boys Season 4 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Achieves Unwanted Record

The latest season of The Boys has landed a Rotten Tomatoes record it likely didn’t want as it becomes the lowest rated by audiences on the review aggregator site. The Boys season 4 ‘Audience Score’ now stands at a divisive 52%, making it the first season in the show’s history to be designated ‘Rotten’ and thus have a big, green popcorn bucket next to its name.

It seems that audiences have fallen out of love with the writing on the show, with user Home L asking “What the hell happened to this show? My gosh,” while Kendall G wonders “Did all of the old writers quit or die? What a change, and not a good one.”

While The Boys has always been satirical, taking aim at the abundance of superhero movies as well as real-world sociopolitical issues, it seems that things may have now been taken too far with the latter for some viewers. User Gabriela M writes…

“Unfortunately I could not pass through the first two episodes. Where before the show was nuanced and about the characters now is a caricature of what was before. It’s all about “the message” and lost its wittiness and originality. You can trade for any other modern show made for modern audiences and you wouldn’t even know (or just scroll through twitter).”

Looking back at earlier seasons of The Boys, the show has always fared well on Rotten Tomatoes. Critically, season 4 continues this trend, with the show earning a 95% rating on the ‘Tomatometer,’ with critics concluding; “Boxing in the political arena with a bloodied smile, The Boys‘ fourth season is grim and even a little glum while holding up a cracked mirror towards modern society.”

Previous audience scores have always been high, though they have been on a downward trajectory since season 1, which earned a score of 90%, followed by season 2 at 83%, and finally season 3 at 75%.

User Kristoffer P has noticed this decline, and largely blames Amazon for gradually making the show worse and worse.

“The quality of the show has gone downhill ever since the first season, sometimes I can’t even believe this is the same thing I started watching 3 seasons ago. They just had to go and blow it up, could’ve been something good. I bet amazon didn’t make the situation better in any way, seeing their track record of wrecking good stuff like lotr or hazbin. F amazon.”

Others have likened The Boys season 4 to Disney, with Brunno M saying, “This show went from good to trash, like Disney trash, I would even dare to say worst. Good job destroying your own audience.” Jordan L, meanwhile, blames the dreaded “woke” saying, “Such garbage. Woke hollywood writers have ruined another series that had potential.”
