Emily in Paris Season 4 Takes a Surprisingly Sad Turn with Camille

Summary

  • Camille’s false pregnancy leads to unpredictable consequences for her, Gabriel, and Emily’s relationships.
  • The dark tone in season four contrasts with the show’s typical lightheartedness, adding depth to the characters.
  • Camille faces tough choices and dealing with the potential fallout they may have on her relationship with others.

Emily in Paris is back with its fourth season filled with even wilder fashion, more intense drama, and stereotypical Parisian flare. Emily (Lily Collins) is navigating new clients within her role at Agence Grateau. Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) is fighting old demons and reigniting an old flame. Luc (Bruno Gouery) has found love, and Mindy (Ashley Park) is faced with new opportunities.

Love triangles abound as well, particularly with Emily as she deals with the fallout of Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Camille’s (Camille Razat) break-up. At the center is Camille’s season three finale declaration to a room full of people, including Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), that Emily and Gabriel have been in love with one another since they first met. But most shocking was the reveal that Camille is pregnant with Gabriel’s baby.

Emily in Paris

2.5/5

Netflix’s Emily In Paris is a comedy series starring Lily Collins as Emily Cooper, a college graduate who travels from Chicago to Paris when she lands a one-in-a-lifetime job opportunity that allows her to enjoy French culture and glamour while she overhauls a local marketing firm. From the mind of Beverly Hills 90210 and Sex and the City creator Darren Star, Emily In Paris takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the cultural differences between the United States and France.

While the romantic comedy-drama is typically lighthearted, focusing on the agency world, luxury clientele, and the interweaving lives of its colorful and diverse cast, the fifth episode of the fourth season, the last to be released in the first batch, took a surprisingly dark turn. It seems atypical of the usual fluffier nature of the show, but the situation adds a new layer of complexity for several key characters.

Camille’s Heartbreak Will Have Ripple Effects

Through the first five episodes, Camille was on a journey of healing. After recognizing that she and Gabriel were over, she was also trying to reconcile her feelings for Sofia (Melia Kreiling), the Greek artist with whom she had an affair and was seemingly still in love with. Plus, she had a baby on the way which would keep her tied to Gabriel for life.

Camille eventually admitted to Emily that she used Emily and Gabriel’s connection to get out of the relationship she wanted out of anyway. She also reunited with Sofia and the renewed lovers ended up oddly temporarily living with Gabriel until they could find their own place. All was going swimmingly, and Emily and Gabriel even decided to give a relationship a go. But it was clear the bond between Camille and Gabriel was affecting both their respective relationships.

After Sofia decided to leave and head back to Greece, unable to deal with how much Camille relied on Gabriel, Camille was left heartbroken. This was especially so when she caught glimpses of how happy Gabriel and Emily were together. But this was only the tip of the iceberg for her.

What to Remember About Emily in Paris Before Season 4

Emily in Paris ended its third season in December 2022, so there has been lots of time to forget all the key details that happened.

After experiencing light spotting, Camille decided to pay a visit to her gynecologist. It’s there that Camille’s worst fears were realized. She was never pregnant. The home pregnancy test she took delivered a false positive result. She missed her period due to stress. There was no baby, which meant there were no ties left to Gabriel either. And now, Sofia was gone, too.

While grieving the loss of a baby she never had and a relationship she can’t get back, Camille confided in a friend. But she hadn’t brought herself to tell Gabriel yet. When she visited him at his restaurant and learned he just discovered he wasn’t getting a Michelin star after all, she didn’t have the heart to break the news to him. Especially since he seemed so excited to become a father. Instead, she lied, now putting on a ruse that she was pregnant.

What’s Next For Camille?

It will undoubtedly be a rocky road ahead for Camille. She can only keep her secret for so long, at most a few months until it’s clear she should be starting to show and isn’t. She may attempt to use the situation to drive a wedge between Gabriel and Emily in hopes that she can use a non-existent baby to convince Gabriel to get back with her (if that’s really what she wants).

Rather than let go of Gabriel and let him move on with his life, she is seemingly planning to keep him in the dark until she can figure out how to tell him the truth.

Logically, Camille could reveal the truth to Gabriel and leave to Athens to be with Sofia, who has left the door open to join her there and would likely be ecstatic if she did without a baby in tow. But even without taking the baby into consideration, the pair were experiencing friction in the relationship already. Sofia may not be the right person for Camille. Gabriel feels more like home, and now that he has found love, Camille may start to see what she is missing.

The fallout will understandably be huge when Gabriel finds out not only that Camille lied (and maybe wonders if she ever really thought she was pregnant to begin with) and Emily catches wind of the manipulation. It’s not a good look for Camille and paints a dark picture of what’s to come.

Emily in Paris Season 4 Continues Its Problematic Chosen One Trope

Emily in Paris returns for its fourth season on August 15, and it may continue a problematic trope.

Gabriel took the news that Camille had been cheating on him fairly well, which could suggest that he has the capacity to deal with bad news with a calm and level head. But preparing to become a father only to find out that it was never really the case will be devastating. If his reaction to not getting a Michelin star is any indication, such disappointing news could push him over the edge.

That could spell the end of things between Lucas and Emily as he potentially becomes consumed by grieving the knowledge that his life isn’t about to change the way he thought it was, and that someone he held so dear lied to him about something so crucial.

There’s some suggestion that Emily and Gabriel’s love story won’t last in the preview of the upcoming episodes of season 4 when Emily meets the handsome Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) on a ski hill. Does she stray from Gabriel after he finds out the truth about Camille, or does this happen even before?

For Camille, she has difficult decisions to make before the fallout of the news has a domino effect on everyone else’s lives. The conversation once she has it with Gabriel won’t be an easy one. Even if she made the wrong decision in not telling him right away, however, What Camille is going through is distressing for her, too.

While cheating, scandals at work, and little white lies are par for the course on Emily in Paris, there has never been a storyline so somber for the otherwise humorous show. Whether the remaining five episodes of the season continue on this path or flip back to a lighter, sunnier tone remains to be seen. For Camille, however, she’ll have to get passed this before she can revert to the bubbly woman fans first met.

The final five episodes of
Emily in Paris
Season 4 are coming to Netflix on September 12, 2024.
