Matthew Fox Joins Yellowstone Spinoff

Matthew Fox is going from the island to big sky country. Deadline broke the news that the Lost star has signed on to the cast of The Madison, the newest Yellowstone spin-off from creator Taylor Sheridan. The series is described as a study of a New York City family after a recent tragedy, who process their grief while vacationing in the Madison River valley of central Montana. The series is expected to begin production soon, but a premiere date has not been announced.

The 58-year-old Fox most recently appeared in the series C*A*U*G*H*T for Australian television, and the 2022 event series Last Light for Peacock. Those series have served as a sort of comeback for the Pennsylvania native, who had taken a seven-year break from acting prior to that point. His last role prior to his hiatus was in the 2015 horror western Bone Tomahawk, opposite Kurt Russell and Patrick Wilson.

The cast of The Madison includes three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns) as Stacy Clyburn, Patrick J. Adams (Suits) as Russell McIntosh, Elle Chapman (A Man Called Otto) as Paige McIntosh, Beau Garrett (The Good Doctor) as Abigail Reese, and Amiah Miller (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Bridgette Reese. Fox will play Paul, a self-reliant bachelor who also loves the outdoors.

It is not yet clear how this new series will connect to the flagship Yellowstone series or the sequel series set to begin production. The new series is set in the Madison River Valley, which would put it very near the fictional Dutton Yellowstone Ranch featured in the original series.

Fox rose to fame with the 1994 drama Party of Five, which ran for six seasons. His role as Dr. Jack Shephard on Lost made him a star, with a six-season run on ABC that earned him an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination, as the show became a TV phenomemon. He went on to star in the films Speed Racer, Alex Cross, and World War Z.

The Expanding Yellowstone TV Universe

The Madison had been in development under the working title 2024, a title format similar to the prequel series in the franchise. The series continues its pre-production work as filming wraps up on the flagship Yellowstone series, which is completing its final six episodes to air on Paramount Network and Peacock in November.A sequel series to Yellowstone is also in pre-production, and will star returning cast members Cole Hauser, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes. They are only the latest additions to an ever-expanding Yellowstone TV universe.

In 2021, the first Yellowstone prequel series, 1883, premiered on Paramount+, starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as James and Margaret Dutton, the first of the Dutton family to head west and establish the Yellowstone Ranch. In 2022, a second prequel series, 1923, premiered on Paramount+, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. That series followed the next generation of the Dutton family, as they fought off land barons out to take their ranch. A second season of that series is currently in production. Another series, based on the 6666 Ranch in Texas featured in Yellowstone, is in development.
