Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Teases an Intense New Adventure & a Shadowy New Rival

The first trailer for the upcoming video game movie sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, has now been unleashed, with fans no doubt racing to watch the footage and get their first glimpse of fan-favorite character Shadow the Hedgehog. The inclusion of the “evil” hedgehog will be one of the Sega and Paramount Pictures movie’s main selling points, as will the casting of John Wick star Keanu Reeves as the voice of Shadow.

Set to be directed once again by Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Jeff Fowler, and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, and Jim Carrey, who will reprise the role of Dr. Ivo Robotnik.

Paramount Pictures

Much like Knuckles in the second movie, Shadow the Hedgehog is expected to feature heavily in the plot of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The character, who first appeared in the 2001 video game Sonic Adventure 2 and is often depicted as an antihero, was teased during the mid-credits scene at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and will now make his big screen debut.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Is Due to Hit Theaters in December

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has been a major hit for Paramount Pictures so far, with both movies becoming two of the highest-grossing video game film adaptations of all time. Despite the long-running video game movie “curse,” both movies have also been met with solid reviews from critics and audiences alike.

The studio now wants to expand, with a Knuckles spinoff series landing on Paramount+ earlier this month. The Sega outing was once again met with generally positive reviews, and became the most-watched original series on the streaming platform in its debut weekend. Showrunner and producer Toby Ascher has since revealed that more Sonic spinoffs are now in the works.

“I think what’s great about the Sonic world is we have all these characters. They’ve come up through the games, they’ve come up through the comics, and they’re all interesting in their own right.

We have a really good plan for the future of Sonic. As we grow these characters, what television has provided us with Knuckles is a moment to do a deep-dive character study into them. As we find stories we’re excited about, we’re going to hopefully continue to do this again.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
is scheduled to be theatrically released by Paramount Pictures in the United States on December 20, 2024.
