Menendez Brothers Working With Netflix Despite Monsters Controversy

The infamous Menéndez brothers, Erik and Lyle, have been thrust back into the headlines recently with the latest season of Ryan Murphy’s Monsters anthology. Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story is a dramatic interpretation of the murders of Jose and Kitty Menéndez and the subsequent trial and conviction of their sons, Erik and Lyle, for the brutal killings. One of the largest points of conversation since the release of the series has been Erik’s condemnation of Netflix & Ryan Murphy over alleged “blatant lies.”

However, in a surprising turn of events, any bad blood present couldn’t have been too detrimental following the latest Menéndez brothers news. After Kim Kardashian reportedly visited the Menendez brothers yesterday, today the official trailer was released for a new Netflix documentary featuring the brothers, discussing their story, three decades later, in their own words. According to the streamer via The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will “offer new insight and a fresh perspective on a case that people only think they know.” The official description of the documentary goes into more detail about what viewers can expect to hear from the convicted murderers.

“In 1996, Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted for the murders of their parents in what became one of the most famous criminal cases of the late 20th century. For the first time in 30 years, and in their own words, both brothers revisit the trial that shocked the nation. Through extensive audio interviews with Lyle and Erik, lawyers involved in the trial, journalists who covered it, jurors, family, and other informed observers, acclaimed Argentinian director Alejandro Hartmann offers new insight and a fresh perspective on a case that people only think they know.”

The Menéndez Brothers Are No Strangers To The Spotlight

The recent pandemonium regarding the Menéndez Brothers is far from the first time the siblings have been center stage in pop culture. Monsters and the newly announced doc from the brothers themselves are merely the latest examples of Hollywood’s desire to cash in on the shock and awe of the murder case. Several networks such as Lifetime, NBC, and Peacock have produced their own reality-based and/or fictitious versions of the case that shocked the nation 30 years ago. However, the upcoming Netflix program will be the first time since the case that the brothers will revisit the infamous crime and subsequent trial together for the world to listen to.

Following the official announcement from Netflix, fans had a lot to say across social media channels, with several taking to X to express their feelings about the latest Menéndez brothers content. One viewer believes the timing of Monsters coming before the latest documentary was a purposeful tactic, tweeting, “Ahhh I see what yall doing. Yall just going on a Menéndez rollout. Drop the Monsters series where it depicts them kinda of differently than most would’ve remembered, only to drop a REAL doc from their words lol. I see the play, I can’t knock it. Business.” Another, who believes this is decades in the making, wrote, “It’s been a long time coming! The Menéndez brothers sharing their story 30 years later is sure to spark a lot of discussions. Looking forward to the premiere on October 7!
