The Beekeeper Barely Edges Out Mean Girls to Win the Weekend

Summary

  • The Beekeeper narrowly beats out Mean Girls to take the top spot at the weekend box office.
  • Wonka’s magic continues to cast its spell as the film finishes No. 3 domestically.
  • Poor Things and American Fiction also perform well, with both films increasing their box office takes from last weekend.

For fans of Mean Girls, there’s nothing “fetch” about this. The doldrums of the dreaded winter season are upon the box office, but this weekend came down to a mere $100,000 separating the No. 1 and No. 2 films. And if the estimates hold — the final numbers will be revealed on Monday — The Beekeeper will take the top spot over the movie musical.

According to Box Office Mojo, the Jason Statham-led action film made an estimated $7.4 million during its third weekend of release. Mean Girls also started its theatrical run on January 12, like The Beekeeper, but directors Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne’s remake had to settle for No. 2 with $7.3 million.

The Beekeeper held strong between its second and third weekends of theatrical release, only falling off 13.7%. And while Mean Girls didn’t hold quite as well, its 37.4% drop between the last two weekends allowed the reimagining to capture the silver medal at the box office. At the time of this writing, The Beekeeper has amassed a worldwide take of $104.2 million, while Mean Girls has made $83.4 million globally.

The final weekend of January goes by the slimmest of margins to The Beekeeper over Mean Girls. Meanwhile, the magic of Wonka continues to mesmerize moviegoers as the Timothée Chalamet-led film locks down No. 3 domestically with an estimated $5.9 million. No. 4 goes to the animated feature film Migration ($5.2 million), and rounding out the Top 5 is the romantic comedy Anyone But You, which finishes with $4.8 million.

The Oscar-nominated Poor Things and American Fiction both continue to show strongly in the Top 10. Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe’s dark Frankenstein-esque comedy sits in the No. 6 spot this weekend with $3 million. Rather than dropping off from weekend to weekend as most films do, Poor Things actually improved on its numbers by increasing 43.1% this week. And the must-see comedy American Fiction performed even better as the movie increased its box office take from last weekend by 65%. With $2.9 million, American Fiction sits comfortably in the No. 7 spot at the box office.

Last but not least is the black-and-white Godzilla Minus One Minus Color taking the No. 9 spot at the weekend box office. The latest installment in Gojira’s film franchise increased by a jaw-dropping 275.6% from last week to bring in another $2.6 million for Toho Co., Ltd. At the time of this writing, Minus One has amassed a worldwide total of $103 million. And Daisy Ridley’s Sometimes I Think About Dying debuts at No. 32 in limited release (2 cinemas) with a per-theater average of $20,230.
