  • Seth MacFarlane will produce the movie from Paramouunt Pictures.
  • The reboot is set for release amidst MCU’s
    Fantastic Four
    and DCU’s

After several vague updates, the Liam Neeson-led The Naked Gun reboot finally has a release date set. Paramount Pictures announced a number of updates to its release schedule, includingTMNT Mutant Mayhem 2 setting a 2026 release date, but the biggest news was that the sort-of-reboot-sort-of-sequel to the Leslie Nielsen comedy franchise will hit theaters on July 15, 2025.

This reboot is one that had many fans worried when it was originally announced, as the humor of the franchise is often seen as offensive and problematic in modern times. This led to fears that the film would be just another run-of-the-mill comedy movie. However, once Neeson was announced to be leading the project – mirroring Nielsen’s transition from serious actor to comedy genius – and Seth MacFarlane’s name was attached, then things seemed to click into a place a little more.

The Naked Gun movies, which were derived from the canceled Police Squad series, became iconic for their absurd humor and satirical take on police procedurals. The franchise often leans into smutty innuendo and smart visual gags, and that plays well to MacFarlane’s boundary pushing, frequently offensive brand of comedy. The Family Guy creator will act as producer on the project, while the script comes courtesy of Akiva Schaffter, Dan Gregor, and Doug Mand.

The movie is another nostalgic throwback that could manage to do well if it honors the legacy of the franchise and plays to the same audience that the original movies continue to appeal to, where political correctness plays a backseat to raising a laugh. However, a summer 2025 release is going to give the movie some tough competition to contend with.

The Naked Gun’s 2025 Release Date Could Be Bad News

Paramount Pictures

The Naked Gun will be debuting in theaters in one of the most crowded summers since the pandemic ended. After taking a year off in 2024, the MCU will be coming back in a big way with The Fantastic Four, and James Gunn and Peter Safran will unleash the DCU’s debut movie Superman: Legacy. Other franchise movies also set to compete for attention are John Wick spin-off Ballerina, the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon, and The Black Phone 2.

However, these movies have had their release dates set for a little while now, meaning that Paramount Pictures clearly has confidence in The Naked Gun being able to hold its own and not go limp when it matters. Although there has been little in the way of details revealed about what the new iteration of the franchise will look like, it has been suggested that Neeson will play the son of Frank Drebin, Nielsen’s original lead character, and that he will be following in his father’s hapless footsteps.

Although original Naked Gun creators David Zucker and Pat Proft reportedly departed the project early in its development, the movie seems to be in the right hands with the team put together. Now, fans know exactly when they will discover if this is the case, and it has turned out to be sooner than many expected for better or worse.
