Fans can gush over that X-Men post-credits scene all they want, but the best thing about The Marvels was undoubtedly the inclusion of Kamala Khan. Also known as Ms. Marvel, Khan actress Iman Vellani represented the heart and soul of the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe entry ever, and she’s been “assured” that her character has a future in the MCU. Vellani said in an interview with Polygon:
I have been assured. So, that feels good, but there was no more assurance than that [laughs]. They give me breadcrumbs, and I try and make a meal out of it.

Even with the Carol Danvers-obsessed Kamala Khan fangirling over Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), in the most heart-warming and hilarious of ways, Vellani’s nuanced and charismatic performance still wasn’t enough to help the film score at the box office. Of all the movies in the MCU’s storied history, dating back to the indelible Iron Man (2008), The Marvels posted the worst numbers of any installment in the franchise.
Over its opening weekend, The Marvels only managed to make $46 million domestically on its way to an MCU-low of $206 million worldwide. Nevertheless, many fans did seem to enjoy the follow-up to the billion-dollar Captain Marvel (2019), and much of The Marvels’ success is due to Vellani’s Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel Mirroring Iman Vellani’s Life
Certainly, the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel deserved more of an audience, but there’s no denying that the show and its star, Iman Vellani, are both huge assets to the MCU moving forward. While critics admonished The Marvels on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s audience score of 82% indicates there are still plenty of devotees to the cause of the “Marvelous” characters.

Disney+ has plenty of action-packed superhero shows to enjoy, but these are the best.
Combined with the glowing returns for Season 1 of Ms. Marvel, which resulted in a nearly perfect Tomatometer rating of 98%, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the higher-ups are interested in bringing back the charismatic Kamala Khan. True, after that tease at the end of The Marvels, a Young Avengers squad led by Ms. Marvel and anchored by Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) seems likely, and then there’s always Kamala’s upcoming role in Marvel Zombies. The future is quite bright for Ms. Marvel, but when The Marvels first dropped in theaters, Vellani compared her own professional experience working in the MCU to what Kamala was going through once she came face to face with her idol, Captain Marvel. Vellani said in an interview with Cosmopolitan:
“I literally live vicariously through Kamala. It’s weird. With the movie, Kamala is leveling up. She’s better at using her powers. She’s going to space. She’s meeting her heroes. And for Iman, it was very much a big thing. I’m working on a big blockbuster movie. I’m working with Brie Larson and Sam Jackson. Like, it’s crazy. What’s good about that is I can channel a lot of my own excitement and enthusiasm into Kamala. It’s like, ‘It’s just the character. I’m playing out the character. I’m acting. It’s not me.'”
