Harvey Guillén Gives Update on What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 and Guillermo’s Final Fate

Summary

  • Harvey Guillén loves doing
What We Do in the Shadows
, but understands it’s time to wrap up after the sixth season.
  • Filming for the final season is already underway, and Guillén feels grateful for the time spent on the show.
  • The final season will provide closure for Guillermo’s storyline and give fans an exciting conclusion to the beloved series.

Harvey Guillén’s portrayal of Guillermo de la Cruz in FX’s What We Do in the Shadows will conclude with the show’s upcoming final season. While Guillén says he loves appearing on the show and “could do Shadows forever,” he’s not surprised the comedy horror series will wrap up with its sixth season.

Guillén recently spoke to MovieWeb about the home media release of Walt Disney’s Wish (where he voices Gabo), and we took time to ask him about What We Do in the Shadows’ final season. Guillén shared that filming is underway and “almost halfway done.” Guillen adds that the What We Do in the Shadows team “had a feeling” that their show would go for six or seven seasons:

“We got the feeling that at six or seven, people tap out. It’s a good chunk of time, because if you think about it, by the time we finish season six and it comes out, we are looking at devoting over seven or close to eight years of our lives from the pilot to the show. That’s a big chunk of time, which we loved spending with the show, but it’s a big amount of time. I think people are looking at other projects and, you know, other stuff. And that’s the good thing about being an actor, is that you can put on a hat and you know that eventually that hat will come off and you’ll have to put on different hat. And I get to do that in between seasons. So, for me personally, I loved doing ‘
Shadows
.’ I could do ‘
Shadows’
forever, I think, because it’s just like, I get to be in ‘
Shadows,’
and I can do voiceover, and I can do movies, ‘
Werewolves Within
,’ you know, I get to go play in between. So I don’t have a problem with that. But six is a good time. I think six is a good frame to wrap it up, and I think people are gonna be really excited about this season.”

What We Do in the Shadows, based on Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s 2014 film of the same name, began in 2019. The mockumentary-style series follows four vampires (three of the bloodsucking variety and one energy vampire) cohabitating in Staten Island. Created by Clement, the series stars Kayvan Novak as Nandor the Relentless, Matt Berry as Leslie “Laszlo” Cravensworth, Natasia Demetriou as Nadja of Antipaxos, Guillén, Mark Proksch as Colin Robinson, and Kristen Schaal as The Guide.

What Will Happen to Guillermo de la Cruz in the Final Season of What We Do in the Shadows?

FXP

Since the show’s inception, Guillén’s Guillermo de la Cruz has dreamed of becoming a vampire, something his master, Nandor the Relentless, has yet to deliver. While Guillén isn’t giving away any spoilers, he told us he thinks it’s great that the show gets an additional season to expand on Guillermo’s storyline:

“After five seasons it would have been like, Guillermo and the storyline and his dream doesn’t come true, but sometimes that happens in real life. It would have been great, you could end it there if you wanted to. But it was nice to get an extra season to kind of put him in a different element, if you will, especially with the storyline. We’ll have to see what happens with that, because if we left it with last season, it would have been like, ‘Womp womp,’ he didn’t get to be a vampire and he wasn’t meant for it, and that’s how the show ends. It would have been a little bit sad, but we get a season to show where we go from there.”
