Adam Sandler Leads All-Star Comedy Cast in Live-Action The Simpsons Concept Trailer

Grown Ups and Happy Gilmore star Adam Sandler leads an all-star cast as a live-action version of The Simpsons in a new trailer created by YouTube user @qaramood. The footage, which has been created using artificial intelligence, a.k.a. AI (shudder) brings The Simpsons to life and casts several major comedic actors as the core cast of beloved characters.

Sandler, of course, takes the lead as the lovably dim-witted dad Homer Simpson, alongside Kristen Wiig as the creaky-voiced, kind-hearted Marge Simpson, Jacob Tremblay as the mischievous Bart Simpson, and McKenna Grace as the wise-but-lonely Lisa Simpson.

The rest of the imagined cast includes Will Ferrell as Homer’s annoying next door neighbor Ned, as well as Jordan Peele as Carl Carlson, Steve Buscemi as Mr. Burns, Neil Patrick Harris as Waylon Smithers, Ben Stiller as Moe Szyslak, John C. Reilly as Barney Gumble, Zach Galifianakis as Chief Wiggum, Steve Carell as Principal Seymour Skinner, Kumail Nanjiani as the now-controversial character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Gaten Matarazzo as Milhouse, Danny McBride as Otto, Bill Hader as Revered Lovejoy, and Keegan-Michael Key as Dr. Hibbert.

While some of the casting choices certainly make sense, some of the AI-generated actors look little like the real person. Looking at you, Gaten Matarazzo. It seems that everything is not coming up Milhouse, after all.

Would a Live-Action Version of The Simpsons Work?

While many have imagined over the years just what a live-action take on The Simpsons might look like, and while the footage does a decent job of bringing this imagined project to life, it largely demonstrates why it should never, ever happen. Even with such a stellar cast.

Though many former animated shows have taken the leap into the real-world over the years, including anime shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender and One Piece, the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles, beloved family shows such as Inspector Gadget, The Flintstones, and The Fairly OddParents, and even Disney classics such as Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King, there is something about The Simpsons that only really works in animation.

It could be the fact that most of the characters are bright yellow, or it could be the ludicrous adventures they embark on and the shenanigans they get up to along the way. Frankly, a lot of the tragedies and accidents that befall Homer would be horrific to watch in live-action, with the failed Springfield gorge jump in particular resulting in something nightmare-inducing.

For now, at least, The Simpsons will remain animated only. The series will continue its legacy as the longest running animated series ever as it begins its 36th season later this year.
