All The Shows Canceled In 2024 On TV & Streaming (So Far)

All The Shows Canceled In 2024 On TV & Streaming (So Far)

We might only be a few months into 2024, but already, it has been confirmed that some shows, both from linear networks as well as streaming services, won’t be returning with new seasons. In a few cases, the cancelations came as a complete surprise. In others, the writing had been on the wall for some time.

A cancelation is not always a death sentence, however, especially nowadays. It’s possible at least some of these shows could return on another network or streaming service. Consider that Netflix recently picked up Girls5eva after Peacock announced it wouldn’t be bringing the series back, with Season 3 coming in March 2024. But that’s wishful thinking for many shows. In most, if not all, of these cases, these shows are probably gone for good.

13 American Born Chinese (2023)

Lasting just a single season, American Born Chinese is a fantasy action-comedy centered around a high schooler named Jin trying to fit in during a crucial coming-of-age time in his life. The situation gets hairy, however, when he is paired with an exchange student to help show him around. The next thing Jin knows, he’s suddenly mixed up in a battle of Chinese gods. One of these gods is played by Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Michelle Yeoh.

Low Viewership Numbers

Fans who know of and appreciate Chinese folk tales and mysticism will enjoy the eight-episode season, which received positive reviews. Lauded for its inclusion of cultural boundaries, the exciting action scenes, and the acting, American Born Chinese did receive some criticism as well. Some people didn’t like that the series diverted too much from the source material, which includes the graphic novel of the same name and inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. But the show had promise as a clever, modern interpretation of old tales, so its cancelation was disappointing to those who watched. Stream American Born Chinese on Disney+.

12 Minx (2022-2023)

Moving from Max to Starz between Seasons 1 and 2, Minx won’t be coming back for a third. The comedy, which stars Jake Johnson and Ophelia Lovibond, is set in the 1970s when a young feminist ironically begins working with an adult entertainment publisher. The goal, however, fits with her feminist mentality: she wants to create the first-ever erotic magazine for women. At a time when such a concept would have been considered completely foreign, the storyline is quite enticing.

Less than 100,000 Viewers Per Episode

Despite the progressive storyline that combines the construct of feminism with an industry historically known for anything but, things took a turn for Minx. While in production for Season 2, Max canceled the series. It was swiftly picked up by Starz, but six months after season 2 aired, that network decided it was the end as well. It’s surprising given how well-received Minx was by critics. However, quality doesn’t always lead to viewers, and the show didn’t pull in enough to get renewed. Stream Minx on Starz.

11 Our Flag Means Death (2022-2023)

One of the most surprising show cancelations so far this year is that of Our Flag Means Death, a period romantic comedy with a dedicated legion of fans. The series, set in the early 18th Century Golden Age of piracy, is about Stede Bonnet, a gentleman-turned-private traveling with his crew. When they meet the famous pirate Blackbeard, however, it spells trouble.

Will Fans Resurrect the Show?

Loosely based on the life of the real Bonnet, Our Flag Means Death has received praise all around for its writing, LGBTQ character portrayals, and hilarious storylines. There’s some speculation that Taika Waititi’s busy schedule might have something to do with the decision not to move forward with another season, though Max did not give an official reason for the cancelation. It might not be the last we see of the show, however. Fans have been furiously contacting Max, according to The Guardian, to urge the streaming service to bring the show back. There has also been a campaign that raised money to erect a billboard in Times Square, while a plane was ordered to fly a banner over Hollywood that read “Save Our Flag Means Death.” So, stay tuned. Stream Our Flag Means Death on Max.

The cancelation of a TV series often leaves its audience with a bitter taste, even more so if the story never really came to a conclusion.

10 Julia (2022-2023)

Despite plenty of positive feedback from critics and viewers alike, there might simply not have been enough people watching Julia for Max to consider bringing the show back for its third season. Thus, the comedy-drama has ended. Julia is all about Julia Child, a woman in the ‘60s who became one of the most well-known and influential celebrity chefs, TV hosts, and cookbook authors. With a strong supporting cast, including David Hyde Pierce, who plays her husband, Paul Child, and Bebe Neuwirth as her close friend Avis DeVoto, Julia was a breath of fresh air among a sea of intense thrillers, dramas, and horror.

Low Viewership Yet Again

Sarah Lancashire brought real-life famous chef, cookbook author, and TV personality Julia Child to life in the series, which follows her rise to fame. What fans love about Julia is that it centers on Child’s life as a powerful, influential, career-driven woman. But the show also focuses on how she made changes that paved the way for the portrayal of women on television and the concept of the cooking show. Her influence, in fact, impacted the television landscape on the whole. Stream Julia on Max.

9 Schmigadoon! (2021-2023)

What’s most saddening about the cancelation of Schmigadoon! is that the show’s creator Cinco Paul confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that a third season, complete with more than two dozen original musical numbers, has already been written. Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key are the focus, a couple looking to breathe new life into their relationship when they suddenly end up in a Golden Age musical. The eclectic supporting and guest cast make Schmigadoon! so fun and uplifting. This includes actors like Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ariana DeBose, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short, Tituss Burgess, and others.

A Casualty of the Strikes

The show was all about love and positivity as the couple tried to find their way back to one another. Their goal is to escape and go back home, but only after having learned these powerful lessons. Receiving good ratings and described as possessing “infectious enthusiasm,” Schmigadoon! even won an Emmy for its original music and lyrics. Fans will have to wait and see if the series manages to find itself a new home. Stream Schmigadoon! on Apple TV+.

8 She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)

She-Hulk

She-Hulk

Release Date
August 18, 2022

Seasons
1

The inclusion of this show on the list needs to be prefaced with the fact that Disney+ has not given an official word on the fate of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. But the outlook of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series does not look good. Tatiana Maslany, who stars as the title character, told Polygon that she doesn’t think there will be a season 2. “I think we blew our budget,” she said, “and Disney was like, ‘no thanks!’” With that said, Disney+ has said it’s re-evaluating the show, so there’s still hope.

Still on the Chopping Block

Maslany starred as Jessica Gao, otherwise known as She-Hulk, an attorney navigating life and a demanding career in her 30s while also balancing a terrifying superpower: she can grow to 6 feet, 7 inches tall, turn green, and demolish anything in her sight. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law received decent reviews, but the conversation around the show and its plot was polarizing. So it won’t be surprising if Disney officially pulls the plug. From Snowpiercer to GLOW, some TV shows were surprisingly canceled despite having been renewed for another season.

7 Rap Sh!t (2022-2023)

Created by Issa Rae, Rap Sh!t ran for two seasons and was positively received. In fact, it holds a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Max canceled the show after two seasons. There’s no confirmed reason, but fans are especially upset since the show ended on a cliffhanger. Many believe a lack of visibility and promotion might have been the reason Rap Sh!t didn’t get the attention it deserved.

No Official Reason Given

What’s Rap Sh!t about? Real-life rapper KaMillion stars as Mia in Rap Sh!t, a single mother who, after reuniting with an old high school friend Shawna (Aida Osman), decides to try and start a rap group together. Shawna makes a freestyle rap video, and it goes viral, prompting them to believe there might be something there worth pursuing. The journey to going from a struggling rapper to a successful one, however, will not be simple. Especially with regular obligations in the way, including full-time jobs and a child. Stream Rap Sh!t on Max.

6 The Flight Attendant (2020-2022)

With clever ways to keep the story going through a second season, some fans hoped a third might be on the horizon. However, Max officially announced in January 2024 that The Flight Attendant won’t take off again. Another victim of the sweeping cancelations that have come at Max already this year, The Flight Attendant is an enthralling show starring Kaley Cuoco as self-destructive flight attendant Cassie Bowden.

Low Viewership and a Dead-End Plot

The show begins with her waking up in a hotel room with a dead man she met the night before on her flight beside her and follows her journey to uncover what happened. The second season took the show in strange directions that almost seemed forced, which might be why Max decided it was time to come to an end. A third season would almost seem silly to keep finding ways to make the story interesting and even remotely believable. The dark comedy-drama mystery thriller would have been better as a miniseries. Stream The Flight Attendant on Max.

5 Wolf Pack (2023)

Wolf Pack

Wolf Pack

Release Date
January 26, 2023

Seasons
1

A supernatural teen drama, even Sarah Michelle Gellar counted among the main cast couldn’t save this series from a premature cancellation. Wolf Pack did not receive favorable reviews. Some critics praised Gellar’s performance, but many were generally unimpressed by the plot and acting by others in the cast. So, this cancelation isn’t surprising at all.

An Unfortunate Failure

The story in Wolf Pack centers around various high schoolers who have been bitten by, or born as, werewolves along with others around them. The new wolves are the result of a creature attack during deadly fires in California. Everett and Blake were both bitten, survived, and saw their wounds mysteriously heal. Now, these two are drawn to one another for reasons they can’t explain. A few new werewolf friends, however, might be able to help. Stream Wolf Pack on Paramount+.

4 Secrets of Sulphur Springs (2021-2023)

A wonderful show to watch with teens and tweens, Secrets of Sulphur Springs is a time-travel mystery thriller set in the fictional title town. Griffin is the central character, a 12-year-old who moves into an old hotel in the town with his family, where his father purportedly plans to restore it and turn it into a vacation destination. Griffin later learns, however, that the hotel is haunted, and together with a new best friend, Harper, the pair find out how to travel back in time to discover what happened to Savannah, the ghost who supposedly lives there. They don’t just want to get the truth, however, they also want to try and save her.

A Mysterious Cliffhanger

The plot shifts to different, though related, stories in seasons 2 and 3, all sticking with the themes of ghost hunting and the adventures of this young group of pseudo-sleuths. But Secrets of Sulphur Springs won’t continue since the series has officially been canceled. Disney+ did not give a reason for the cancellation. Stream Secrets of Sulphur Springs on Disney+.

3 Obliterated (2023)

Lasting only a single season and canceled just a few months after it premiered on Netflix, Obliterated received unfavorable reviews right from the get-go. The action dramedy begins with an Armed Forces special-ops team that assembles to stop a deadly terrorist attack on Las Vegas. But the show is really about the aftermath: once they succeed, they head out to celebrate in Sin City with every indulgence imaginable. That is until they learn that they neutralized a fake bomb and the real one is still out there. Intoxicated and otherwise out of the right frame of mind to handle such a delicate situation, the team has no choice but to splash some water on their faces and get to work.

Another Unsurprising Ending

The premise sounds downright hilarious, in theory. But it’s in the execution where Obliterated arguably fell short. Critics call the show “overly busy” with an “excruciating pace” and too much repetition. Beyond the unsavory reviews, the plot isn’t really one that could continue into a second season or be believably repeated anyway. Thus, the cancelation of Obliterated was expected by many. Stream Obliterated on Netflix.

2 Ratched (2020)

Ratched

Ratched

Creator
Ryan Murphy, Evan Romansky

Release Date
September 18, 2020

Seasons
1

Despite Sarah Paulson starring in this series and Ryan Murphy creating it alongside Evan Romansky, Ratched won’t be returning for a second season. A psychological thriller, the show is about the character of Nurse Mildred Ratched, serving as a prequel to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. A young nurse in a psychiatric hospital, she wants everyone to believe that she’s the picture-perfect nurse. But she’s hiding a darkness, and a desire to change the mental health care system from the inside.

High Cost and Other Commitments

Despite the wonderful cast and the power of Murphy behind the show, Ratched didn’t receive overwhelmingly positive reviews. The show was criticized for plot holes and “cartoonish characterizations,” though critics loved the production value and the performances of many of the actors, including Paulson. Even though Ratched initially received a two-season order, the second season isn’t coming. Stream Ratched on Netflix.

1 Tacoma FD (2019-2023)

Tacoma FD lasted for a respectable four seasons, but it won’t be coming back for number five. The sitcom follows a group of firefighters working in a firehouse in Tacoma, Washington. Known as one of the wettest cities in the U.S., the crew rarely gets any calls to actually fight fires. Instead, they deal with the less glamorous cat-in-a-tree, finger-stuck-in-the-socket type calls. While they pass the time between calls, they find ways to keep themselves busy with silly rivalries, competitions, and other shenanigans.

One of the Best Sitcoms You Haven’t Watched

Tacoma FD appeared to have a dedicated audience of fans who loved it, but not enough to keep the show going any longer. truTV did not provide a reason for the cancelation, but it may be that the series has simply run its course. It’s also worth noting that truTV now only has one original series left, the unscripted show Impractical Jokers, so the cancelation might be part of a larger directional network shift. Watch Tacoma FD on truTV.
