Bad Bays 4 Is No. 1, Summertime Blues Continue

2024’s summer movie season continues to stagger along, even with the arrival of Bad Boys: Ride or Die and The Garfield Movie’s stick-to-itiveness. Now, there wasn’t any question which film this weekend would rise to the top, but it’s not really a victory for the ole summertime. Bad Boys 4 claims the No. 1 spot at the box office with an estimated $56 million domestically (per The Numbers). And while that’s certainly a successful start when compared to the other entries in the Bad Boys franchise, the summer’s struggles continue.

The good news is that Bad Boys: Ride or Die made back more than its reported $100-million production budget in just one weekend! The Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led action flick did even better business overseas as Bad Boys 4 made an additional $48.6 million internationally, which brings the movie’s worldwide total to $104.6 million already. That’s great news for Sony Pictures Releasing, but the summer drought overall continues.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is the fourth installment in the action-comedy film series starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The series centers on hard-boiled Miami detectives Mike Lowery and Marcus Burnett, who take on dangerous drug kingpins and thwart dangerous schemes as they attempt to stop the circulation of illicit drugs in their city. This time, Miami’s finest are the ones on the run.

Even with the success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the total domestic box office almost failed to reach the $100-million mark. Only two of the summer’s six weekends have broken the $100-million target this year. It’s a disturbing trend that may not find much relief until possibly the release of Inside Out 2 (June14), or when Deadpool & Wolverine finally drops on July 26.

Summer Movie Season’s Struggles Continue

As mentioned, after six weekends, the 2024 summer movie season has only produced two weekends eclipsing $100 million. By comparison, the first six weekends of the 2023 summer ALL amassed more than $100 million each, and the weekend of June 2 last year brought in $205.2 million thanks to the arrival of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
