First streaming on Netflix in 2015, Daredevil marked new territory for Marvel as the series featured gruesome violence and adult themes, all stylized with dark visuals. However, according to Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio, the original show is tame compared to some scenes in the new Disney+ reboot Daredevil: Born Again. “Dark” and “Disney” are two words that are rarely paired together but, with Daredevil (Charlie Cox) getting his first standalone MCU outing in Born Again, the character is bringing his signature TV-MA content with him.
Vincent D’Onofrio and the cast of Daredevil: Born Again sat down with Rotten Tomatoes TV following their D23 pannel. During the conversation, the stars were asked about bringing the old show’s dark tone to the MCU. When Marvel Studios announced the new series for Disney+, many fans assumed that the mature scenes would be toned down when shown on the House of Mouse’s streaming service. Thankfully, Vincent D’Onofrio assured fans that, not only will Daredevil: Born Againmatch the original show’s tone, in some scenes, it’s even darker. The actor said:
“There are some things in this show, that we go much further with than we did on the original show. There’s one thing in particular that my character does that I can’t believe made it into the cut.”
Daredevil: Born Again Features Marvel Comics’ Most Violent Villain
As well as its layered storytelling and incredible one-shot fight scenes, the original Daredevil garnered a reputation as the most violent live-action Marvel show/movie ever made. D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk was a brutal villain for Daredevil to bring down. Season 2 then upped the ante, introducing Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, an anti-hero who’s calling card is leaving no one left alive. Daredevil: Born Again will take the violence and brutality to the next level. Alongside bringing back the aforementioned characters, the rebooted series is introducing the franchise’s most sadistic villain to date, Muse.
A twisted ‘artist,’ Muse creates paintings, murals, and dioramas in Hell’s Kitchen using the blood and dismembered body parts of his victims. Wearing a white suit with blood dripping from the eyes, Muse will pose a serious physical and psychological problem for Daredevil. The first glimpse of Muse was revealed to the audience at D23, and it lives up to the gruesome artwork from the comics. The D23 footage has yet to officially hit the internet, but fans are already losing their minds over the leaked photos and clips taken by those in attendance. As well as showcasing Muse, the trailer also gave fans their first look at Hector Ayala, a.k.a. The White Tiger, with the hero finally making his live-action debut.

The Internet Blows Up with First Reactions to the Daredevil: Born Again Trailer
Marvel Studios has listened to the fans, according to the first online reactions to the D23 trailer.
As well as showcasing the new heroes and villains, the trailer also teases some new costumes. In the original show, Daredevil had two costumes: the hand-made black suit, and the iconic red devil suit. In Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock has been brushing up on his fashion knowledge, and now has five different numbers to choose from (although they’re not this season’s colors). Eagle-eyed fans have even pointed out that one of the helmets looked similar to the one Ben Affleck wore in the panned 2003 movie Daredevil.
