Deadpool & Wolverine Director Shawn Levy Addresses Those Taylor Swift Casting Rumors

Now that Deadpool & Wolverine has managed to gross an amazing $824 million dollars in just its first couple of weeks, director Shawn Levy is opening up about one casting rumor in particular that had fans buzzing long before the film ever hit theaters. While the movie already boasts an impressive guest list featuring the likes of Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Garner, and Blake Lively, there was one noticeably absent star: Taylor Swift.

Swift was rumored for months to have a cameo in the latest MCU film, either as Dazzler or Lady Deadpool, but according to Levy, those rumors were never true. Speaking with Variety, the director clarified the situation, and thanked fans everywhere for providing a much-needed “smokescreen” that they could play behind. Check out his comments below.

That was one of the loudest rumors that came out of nowhere. It was never true. Thank you, internet, for building such a smokescreen of rumors and half-truths so that no one ever knew what was going to happen.

Deadpool & Wolverine

3.5/5

A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Release Date
July 26, 2024

Swift was rumored to appear in the film thanks to her close relationship with both Ryan Reynolds and Lively, as the megastar is godmother to their children. Lively and Swift first connected in 2015, and even though they have their own lives, the duo have seemed inseparable ever since. Swifities everywhere began buzzing about her possible appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine as far back as mid-2023, with Levy himself adding fuel to the fire earlier this year by saying, “What can I say? I think intrigue is fun.”

Shawn Levy Says Deadpool & Wolverine Cameos Were Easy to Come By

By now, everyone and their dog knows that Swift is not in Deadpool & Wolverine, but the movie still has a gargantuan amount of cameos, including Blade, Gambit, Elektra, and Johnny Storm. While one would assume that it took a lot of finagling to get everyone on board to appear in the film, such is not the case. When it came right down to it, Levy says it didn’t take much convincing for all the actors to be on the same page with what everyone was trying to accomplish in the new movie.

“With pretty much no exceptions, every surprise casting in this movie came down to Ryan or I reaching out to the actor before lawyers and before agents [were involved]. It literally was us asking and invariably people saying ‘yes.'”

As for Swift? She’s already set to direct her first feature film, and Levy has compared her to the likes of another Hollywood powerhouse: Steven Spielberg. Levy got to watch Swift in action behind the camera, as he had a small part in her award-winning short film, All Too Well. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly last year, he said that she “has the makings of a hell of a director.”

“Taylor, the depth of her vision for how she wants a creative piece to be, whether it’s a lyric, a melody, a bridge, a concert tour, a video, it’s profound. It’s profoundly vivid, and she has the strength of her convictions. Spielberg was on the set of a movie he produced that I directed, called Real Steel, and I said to him, ‘How do you know it’s the right shot?’ His answer was, ‘The way you see it, that makes it right.’ I feel like that’s something Taylor Swift has figured out really well, because that’s about trusting your instinct. […] I think she has the makings of a hell of a director.”

There’s no word yet on when Swift’s film will start production, but it will still be a long way off. The singer is knee-deep in the European leg of her Era’s Tour, which has already managed to gross an astounding $1 billion dollars in revenue. Whether she’ll have the same success at the box office remains to be seen, but there’s little doubt that her legion of Swifites will turn out in droves to help make her debut movie a massive success.

Deadpool & Wolverine
