Having already been the subject of online ridicule, it was the turn of Saturday Night Live to take a shot at the now infamous Dune sandworm popcorn bucket in a musical sketch that certainly plays to dubious life-choices.
The Dune popcorn bucket was revealed ahead of the arrival of the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic, which hits theaters on March 1, and created quite a stir online for its unfortunate similarities to a male sex toy – at least in the eyes of many social media users who flooded the internet with comments about the inappropriate appearance of the item.
On Saturday night, SNL took aim at the collectible through the medium of song. From a seemingly innocuous opening scene of Marcello Hernandez and The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri appearing to set up a date night while the former’s parents were out of their house. However, as the song kicks in with some sentimental lyrics about the touching of hearts and innocence, things take a very different turn when Hernandez’s character decides that he wants his first special time to be with the toothy sandworm bucket. From here on out, things get even more bizarre as Edebiri and others from the video’s opening scene all declare their NSFW intentions with the popcorn bucket topper. Dune: Part Two Will Be Denis Villeneuve’s Penultimate Dune Movie
Away from the questionable merchandise, Dune: Part Two is set up to continue the story from last year’s film. Whether director Villeneuve will get to complete his trilogy of movies based on the works of Frank Herbert is something that will likely depend on this film’s release improving on the box office results of its predecessor.
While Dune was by no means a flop, taking just over $400 million, the hefty production cost of $165 million plus marketing expenses means that the movie reportedly failed to break even on its theatrical gross alone. Dune: Part Two will clearly have a similar budget to recoup, and if the sequel fails to match or beat its predecessor, then Warner Bros. could be tempted to pull the plug on Villeneuve’s plans for one more movie. Previously, the director teased that his next and final Dune movie is almost ready to go.
“[Dune Messiah] is being written right now, the screenplay is almost finished but it is not ‘finished’ it will take a little time. I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis – but my dream would be go a last time on this planet that I love.”
Whether that movie comes about is something that we will discover next month after Dune: Part Two – and its questionable popcorn bucket – hit cinemas on March 1.
