As reported by Variety, DeGeneres released a statement about what she discusses in her upcoming special. DeGeneres has previously stated that this special will be her final appearance in show business.

“For the first time in six years, Ellen DeGeneres returns to the stage in her new comedy special ‘Ellen Degeneres: For Your Approval.’ The final comedy special of her historic career, Ellen gets personal and reveals what she’s been doing since being ‘kicked out of show business.’ From the mundane world of raising chickens and parallel parking to the harsh reality of becoming a brand-name celebrity, she goes deep into her stand-up roots and brings laughs through life’s most real and absurd realities.”

Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval sees DeGeneres return to the stand-up stage for the first time in six years, and will follow her life over the years and reveal how she has fared since “being kicked out of show business.” Whether leading your own high-profile Netflix special counts as being “kicked out of show business” is up for debate. DeGeneres produced the new special with Ben Winston, Fulwell 73 Productions and her spouse, Portia de Rossi. Joel Gallen will direct it.

The special sees DeGeneres reuniting with the streaming giant following her previous collaboration with Netflix in 2018’s Relatable. After being absent from the public eye since the allegations, DeGeneres took to the stage for her stand-up show Ellen’s Last Stand… Up Tour earlier this year. During the tour, she expressed her feelings about what happened and took the time to address the controversy surrounding the allegations and the internal investigation that occurred on her daytime show.

What Happened to Ellen?

The series finale for her Emmy-winning daytime talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, aired in May 2022 after its near 20-year run. The end came after a report of allegations of racism, sexual misconduct and intimidation on the set of the show. The report also addressed the poor treatment and criticism of how the production handled crew members’ compensation during the COVID pandemic. DeGeneres gave an on-air apology at the time, and three producers were fired shortly after WarnerMedia conducted an internal investigation.

Since then, DeGeneres has kept a generally low profile. She is best known for her daytime talk show, which won 63 Daytime Emmy Awards over the years, surpassing a record previously set by The Oprah Winfrey Show. DeGeneres began her stand-up career in the early 80s, but her initial rise in popularity came from her role in her sitcom Ellen, which ran from 1994 until 1998. During her career she has hosted the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and the Primetime Emmy Awards and is also known for voicing the character Dory in the Pixar films Finding Nemo and its sequel, Finding Dory.

Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval
is set to premiere on September 24 on Netflix.
