Poor Things star Emma Stone reunites with director Yorgos Lanthimos for their new absurdist black comedy Kinds of Kindness, which hits theaters on June 21, 2024. While the film has been getting a lot of buzz since its Cannes premiere on May 17, there’s one scene in particular that has provided the internet with some new meme material: Emma Stone dancing. While seeing the 35-year-old two-time Academy Award-winner strut her stuff is not unusual (she did win her first award for Best Actress thanks to her performance in La La Land), this time there’s just something about her gyrations that have captivated the masses, and taken over the likes of TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).

Speaking with IndieWire after the Cannes premiere of Kinds of Kindness, Stone spoke briefly about the dance number, saying that though the film’s heavy themes and intense situations were certainly not a “cakewalk,” the dancing was a nice reprieve from the more serious moments. Check out her comments below.

“This was nine months after we shot Poor Things. To be back in this world with [writer] Efthymis [Filippou] and a world of his own, there was a sense of joy in that for him and, consequently, for all of us. But it’s heavy themes and situations going on. So it’s definitely not a cakewalk. Except for the dance part, which I thought was great.
That was just fun.

Kinds of Kindness (2024)

4.5/5

Kinds of Kindness is a 2024 comedy-drama film by writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos. Split across segments, Kinds of Kindness tells the stories of a man trying to reclaim his destiny, a police officer whose wife returns after being lost at sea only to seem like a different person, and a woman tasked with finding a future spiritual leader.

The scene in question features Stone decked out in a pair of brown pants and matching jacket over a silk shirt, and sees her dancing in front of a car with a woman in a wheelchair in the background. Stone came up with the idea of dancing in front of the car, and from there the only thing left to do was get jiggy with it.

“Then we just improvised and spent a while picking the song and that was really it.”

Emma Stone Leads an Ensemble in Kind of Kindness

Having worked with Yorgos Lanthimos previously on the period pieces The Favorite (2018) and Poor Things (2023), Stone was front and center in both movies, carrying them both to greatness. Though Stone is still featured prominently in the anthology film Kinds of Kindness, its ensemble cast took some of the pressure off of her, allowing others to shine. She calls co-star Jesse Plemons (Civil War) the “true lead of this film.”

Jesse definitely is the true lead of this film
, but the ensemble of this film is also so amazing. All of the actors that are here [in Cannes], we’re all together again, seven or eight of us. And the movie is rotating around these changing characters and we’re getting to be together the whole time.”
