With the deadline fast approaching, we’re highlighting the best films to check out, from clever horror satires to beloved coming-of-age classics to modern sci-fi masterworks. Somehow, moviegoers continually underestimate Ralph Fiennes, one of the best working actors in the business, and two years ago, he delivered another outstanding performance in a career full of them in The Menu. The film, a wicked delight that deftly balances terror, comedy, and social satire, sees Fiennes portray world-famous chef Julian Slowik, who invites a collection of guests to his exclusive restaurant on a private island. The group (a uniformly great ensemble, including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, and John Leguizamo) settles in for what they believe to be a five-course meal, but deadly surprises await.

20 Movies That Flopped at the Box Office but Were Massive Successes on Streaming

Box office performance isn’t always an indicator of long-term success. Here are 20 films that found an audience post-theaters.

Director Mark Mylod, who directed several of the best episodes of Succession, successfully juggles all the various tones and genres at his disposal, laced with the kind of acidic wit that so often defined that show. Chef Slowik’s ulterior motives, rooted in resentment towards the fine-dining culture that exploits his work, allow the film to give some clever commentary about both class and the art vs. commerce conflict that artists often face. The Menu leaves Hulu on Apr. 2.

Blade Runner 2049

By all metrics, it shouldn’t be possible for a sequel to one of the most beloved sci-fi films of all time to be mentioned in the same breath as its predecessor. Yet, against all odds, that’s exactly what Denis Villeneuve accomplished with Blade Runner 2049, a near-perfect sequel that not only lives up to the original but arguably surpasses it in a few areas.

Set 30 years after Ridley Scott’s classic, 2049 follows Officer K (Ryan Gosling, again proving himself one of our most versatile actors), a replicant indebted to the LAPD for work as a blade runner. Early in the film, after retiring one of his own, K discovers the hidden corpse of Rachael (from the original), who died during a C-section. News that the child might still be alive quickly spreads, and K is assigned to terminate him since his existence might destabilize society (replicants were previously thought incapable of reproduction).

23 Best Hulu Original Films and Television Series to Watch Right Now

From super-funny comedies to flat-out eerie shows, here are some of Hulu’s best original film and television programming.

Blade Runner is one of the most thematically fascinating films ever made, beautifully exploring how empathy defines one’s humanity in a world where man and machine are increasingly indistinguishable. Villeneuve further explores this idea through a fascinating subplot involving K’s relationship with Joi (Ana de Armas), his holographic girlfriend, and whether their love is genuine when her programming requires her to show attraction to him.

Blade Runner 2049 is one of the most visually stunning films in the last decade, with impeccable design and some of the best cinematography to grace IMAX screens possibly ever (legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins finally won his long overdue Oscar for his work here). Blade Runner 2049 leaves Hulu on Apr. 30.

Ghostbusters

Leaving Hulu on Apr. 30

Ghostbusters has a somewhat mixed legacy, considering how contentious almost every single one of its sequels proved, and some argue it was never the kind of film that could sustain a franchise in the first place. And yet the 1984 original remains an utter classic, effortlessly blending action, horror, and comedy in a way that still feels unique even today.

It’s a film that radiates the 1980s spirit in the best way possible, with countless memorable one-liners, action setpieces, and quirky characters (the Stay-Puft marshmallow man, in particular, still brings the house down). It’s a testament to the film’s timelessness that they’re still a recognizable part of pop culture today. Top that off with a first-rate cast (Bill Murray has arguably never been funnier, nor has Rick Moranis or Harold Ramis), an intriguing plot involving the return of the mysterious demigod Zuul, and a pitch-perfect title song, and busting still makes us feel good to this day. If you think you’d better call the Ghostbusters, you have until Apr. 30.

Stand By Me

Leaving Hulu on Apr. 30

For an author so prolific and so readily cinematic, there’s never been any shortage of great Stephen King adaptations. Yet Stand By Me still stands tall among the best of them; based on King’s 1982 novella The Body, the film tells the story of four young boys (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell) who go on a journey to find a boy recently reported missing and believed dead. The setup is simple, but what unfolds is one of the most poignant coming-of-age stories of all time, an ode to lost innocence and a testament to the power of friendship.

Director Rob Reiner (in the middle of a hot streak that lasted from This is Spinal Tap to roughly A Few Good Men) capably captures the essence of King’s story, but he wisely lets his young cast take center stage. They are uniformly fantastic (Wheaton and Phoenix are the standouts if we had to pick between them), showcasing excellent comedic timing and emotional maturity, but they shine brightest as an ensemble. It’s a film so beautifully done that even the notoriously picky King felt they did justice to his work, and those who want to revisit it on Hulu have until Apr. 30.
