A Revolution on Canvas

Stream on Mar. 5

A Revolution on Canvas is an HBO original documentary that follows Nickzad “Nicky” Nodjoumi, an Iranian-born American artist whose paintings went missing during the height of the Islamic Revolution. His daughter, first-time director Sara Nodjoumi, investigates the disappearance of over 100 paintings created by Nicky.

Deemed treasonous by Islamic radicals, his works vanished from the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art following his solo exhibition, “Report on the Revolution,” in 1980. Subsequently fleeing the country for America, the renowned artist left without any paintings, which were critical of the Shah’s regime. Decades later, Nicky and his daughter do their best to track down the paintings in an effort to reclaim the missing work.

During her endeavor, Sara partakes in rather frank conversations with her father and mother, who’s also an artist named Nahid Hagigat. As a result, she begins to formulate a timeline of events that helps her understand how her parent’s personal story reflects the path of so many immigrant families whose lives ultimately get caught in the crossfire of politics. As she grapples with her own complex feelings about her upbringing and the mysteries surrounding her childhood, Sara manages to weave together the personal and political, creating a compelling narrative about the power and importance of art. A Revolution on Canvas is streaming on Max on Mar. 5.
