Every TV Show Coming to Max in September 2024

Now that House of the Dragon has concluded its second season, some subscribers may feel that Max won’t have any compelling series worth watching next month. However, nothing could be further from the truth. In the coming weeks, the streaming service has some pretty impressive shows slated for release, which viewers will definitely want to check out. While there might not be an extensive list of new options available in September, there’s certainly an abundance of quality.

With a highly anticipated limited series gearing up for its premiere and a brand-new adult anime ready to frighten viewers the moment it drops, the shows headed to Max should be on every viewer’s radar. That said, the handful of series set to hit the platform next month won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Nonetheless, those seeking riveting narratives and complex storytelling should look no further than what Max has to offer in September.

My Brilliant Friend (Season 4)

My Brilliant Friend is an Italian/Neapolitan-language coming-of-age story about a woman named Elena Greco (Margherita Mazzucco) who grew up in Naples during the tumultuous time of post-WWII Italy. Now an elderly woman living in a home filled to the brim with books, she decides to write her own story.

With her old friend, Lila (Gaia Girace), on her mind, Elena recounts the luminous friend she made at primary school over 60 years ago who seemingly disappeared without a trace many years later. Her best friend and sometimes her worst enemy, Elena recounts her life with Lila and does her best to unravel the mystery of her brilliant friend. A tale of friendship and love, My Brilliant Friend returns with its fourth and final season on Sept. 9.

The Penguin (Limited Series)

Stream on September 19

Academy Award-nominated actor Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin in the new eight-episode spin-off series that expands the world of 2022’s The Batman. Set one week after the events of the film; The Penguin follows the titular character as he attempts to seize power and sit at the helm of Gotham’s criminal underworld. With Carmine Falcone dead after Batman’s actions, a power vacuum has been created, and Penguin isn’t the only one seeking to control the streets. As the former chief lieutenant of the notorious crime boss, he understands what it takes to run the seedy underbelly of Gotham. However, the task won’t be easy.

With Carmine’s daughter Sofia (Cristin Milioti) now out of Arkham Asylum, there’s no telling what the psychotic serial killer will do in the wake of her father’s death. As she and Penguin converge, viewers will explore the complexities of their personally connected pasts and extremely violent backstories. As Penguin works to establish himself at the top and provide the kind of life for his mother that she’s always wanted, he’ll have to strategically subdue his foes while simultaneously striking fear into the hearts of everyone in Gotham. The series includes performances by Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Zegen, Deirdre O’Connell, Clancy Brown, and Theo Rossi. The Penguin is streaming on Sept. 19.

Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror (Limited Series)

Stream on September 28

Based on Junji Ito’s horror manga series, Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is a terrifying adult animation show that follows a town of people as they slowly go insane. The four-episode limited series revolves around two high school students living in a peaceful and quaint Japanese town called Kurouzu-cho. While Kirie Goshima (Uki Satake) and Shuichi Saito (Shin’ichirô Miki) are regular teenagers, just like all the others in their community, it’s ultimately left to them to save their town from ultimate chaos. After Shuichi tells Kirie about his father’s bizarre behavior and obsession with spirals, she initially laughs. However, it soon becomes abundantly clear that the situation is no laughing matter.

When an onslaught of alarming incidents begins to afflict their fellow townspeople, Kirie and Shuichi are unable to deny that the mysterious “spiral curse” lies at the center of it all. As people become increasingly infatuated with spiral-shaped patterns in the clouds, their hair, their food, etc., the teens must find a way to survive the horrors emerging around them and break the stronghold the curse has on their loved ones. Wildly terrifying, Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is directed by Hiroshi Nagahama, while Hereditary composer Colin Stetson has been charged with creating the anime’s score. Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is streaming on Sept. 28.
