Happy Gilmore 2 First Look Reveals Adam Sandler’s Return in the Netflix Comedy Sequel

Adam Sandler has now been spotted reprising one of his most beloved roles in the long-awaited Happy Gilmore (1996). The Netflix sequel is now filming, with Sandler being spotted on set sporting a cosy-looking bathrobe and carrying a set of golf clubs as the follow-up brings Happy and his unorthodox swing back to screens almost three decades after the original.

You can check out the first footage from behind-the-scenes of Happy Gilmore 2 below courtesy of X user Shooter, alongside several images shared by Chicks in the Office.

While the footage doesn’t give too much away regarding the plot of Happy Gilmore 2, it does look like the now-famous golfer could still be living in his beloved grandma’s house. Sadly, the actress who portrayed Grandma Gilmore, Frances Bay, passed away in 2011 aged 92, and with no reports of a recast, the character is unlikely to appear in the sequel. However, we can likely expect the story to reference her passing.

It’s certainly exciting to see Sandler back in one of his best-loved roles, and while there are concerns over whether the follow-up will ever be able to live up to the comedic legacy of the first movie (manage your expectations, as it probably won’t), they are going to give it their best shot. This starts with bringing back several members of the original cast, including Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit, and Ben Stiller as Hal L.

Happy Gilmore 2 Will Debut on Netflix

Released way back in 1996, the first Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late, great Carl Weathers, and follows an unsuccessful ice hockey player with a red-hot temper, Happy, who discovers a newfound talent for golf. While the first movie was met with a mixed response upon release, it has since garnered a cult following, with many excited to see the return of Gilmore and the continued rivalry between him and the villainous Shooter McGavin.

Netflix officially ordered a sequel to the Adam Sandler sports comedy Happy Gilmore earlier this year, with Sandler returning as the titular character and penning the script alongside the original movie’s writer, Tim Herlihy. For the sequel, Sandler will reunite with Murder Mystery director Kyle Newacheck, with the filmmaker behind the likes of What We Do in the Shadows, Workaholics, Community, and Parks and Recreation taking over the helm from Happy Gilmore director Dennis Dugan.

As well as Frances Bay, several other prominent Happy Gilmore stars are sadly no longer with us, including The Price is Right host Bob Barker, Carl Weathers, and Joe Flaherty. Sandler, though, has promised that Happy Gilmore 2 will pay tribute to all of them, with the actor saying, “somehow they’ll be involved.” Plot details for Happy Gilmore 2 have yet to be revealed, but it has been confirmed that new cast members include Nick Swardson (Just Go with It), Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer), Bad Bunny (Bullet Train), Travis Kelce, with the NFL player and Taylor Swift’s beau likely to play a round of gold alongside Sandler’s character ala Bob Barker in the first movie.
