may feature more Multiverse interactions, potentially bringing back original Avengers.
  • With the X-Men’s introduction to the MCU, the question remains about who will play them in the Mutant Saga, as Jackman’s Wolverine may have a limited long-term role.

Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine face off in epic new Marvel Cinematic Universe art, potentially envisioning what could happen if the wildest fan dreams about the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie come true. With the Multiverse Saga diving into several other realities, the lines between what is and is not MCU canon are very quickly fading away to nothing, and with both Maguire and Jackman recently reprising their former Marvel roles, there is nothing like a good piece of fan art to celebrate.

Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness were the first movies of the MCU that really began to tease at what the fracturing reality of the MCU could potentially lead to. In the case of the former, there were several villains from Sony’s Spider-Man movies, along with both Maguire and Andrew Garfield to boot. In Multiverse of Madness, Strange encountered many variants of himself, and characters such as Mr Fantastic and Professor X in alternate universes. Now Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds will be the latest Marvel stars to break into the MCU from the Fox universe, via a little interaction with the Loki-centric Time Variance Authority, in Deadpool & Wolverine.

While there have been many face-offs demanded by fans, this time around it is a clash between Maguire and Jackman’s respective heroes that takes center stage in a fantasy showdown shared by Art of Time Travel. You can check out the image below.

Could Jackman’s Wolverine and Maguire’s Spider-Man Meet in the MCU?

Currently, it is unclear who will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, mainly because there is no script, no casting and writers/directors are always in doubt even after appointment with Marvel Studios. For this reason, battles between characters like Jackman’s Wolverine and Maguire’s Spider-Man are all pie the sky for the foreseeable future.

Maguire has been open to reprising his role as Peter Parker again, and although Deadpool & Wolverine is being seen as Jackman’s last huzzah – a second one – as Wolverine, no one is ruling out his return at least once more in the Multiverse-closing Secret Wars, which looks set to act as a soft reboot for the franchise.

With rumors that the Mutant Saga will follow Secret Wars, it is clear that the X-Men are coming to the MCU as permanent fixtures in several years’ time. The real question is who will be playing them, as by the time that saga kicks off, Jackman is likely to be pushing 60, which pretty much rules him out of any long-term role as Wolverine in the franchise beyond a potential Secret Wars appearance. This opens the way for the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Taron Edgerton and several other rumored stars to take over the claws and carry on the legacy of Wolverine into a brave new MCU world.

Like a real-life superhero, Hugh Jackman saved Deadpool & Wolverine from being shelved at Marvel Studios.

Reports have suggested that Avengers 5 will have one of the biggest rosters of Marvel heroes since Endgame, with over 60 characters set to appear. While the plot of that movie has been up in the air since the departure of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, its reported scope suggests that Secret Wars is going to be an even bigger movie event, and that could mean many appearances by some surprising former franchise stars – including original Avengers Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. if some rumors are to be believed. With this in mind, the chances of Maguire’s Spider-Man coming face-to-face with Jackman’s Wolverine are not too far from the reach of possibility just yet.
