‘IF’ Debuts At #1 Domestically, Amy Winehouse Biopic Goes ‘Back to Black’

The Big Picture

  • I
    F
debuts at #1 at the domestic box office, grossing $35 million in its opening weekend.
  • Meanwhile, Amy Winehouse biopic
    Back to Black
struggled to make an impression among strong holdovers.
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
is still strong worldwide, with over $230 million in earnings.

John Krasinski‘s (A Quiet Place) family movie debut IF asks parents and kids to imagine a world of possibilities, and one of them certainly came to life: The movie debuted at #1 at the domestic box office and grossed $35 million in its opening weekend. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool & Wolverine) as the father of a girl who can see everyone’s imaginary friends. The movie earned an extra $24 million worldwide, putting it on track to cross the $100 million barrier by next weekend.

The cute and fluffy imaginary friends were able to dethrone the not-so-cute and cuddly creatures from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The standalone sequel dropped one position and added $26 million to its domestic run. Worldwide, the action-adventure is still a standout: It has raked in over $230 million. Should it keep its steady pace, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes might end its theatrical run with a lifetime gross similar to other entries from the franchise like 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($481 million) and War For The Planet of the Apes ($490 million).

Meanwhile, horror fans flocked to theaters to check out the anticipated reboot The Strangers: Chapter 1. With a modest $12 million haul for its opening this weekend, the horror film clocked in at #3 at the box office. The movie reportedly only cost $8.5 million to make, garnering the franchise reboot a successful opening. The horror film is the first of a planned trilogy whose second installment is expected to debut later this year.

Ryan Reynolds and Zendaya Continue to Dominate the Big Screen

This weekend’s new titles made the former top contenders at the box office take a slight drop when compared to the previous weeks. Action-comedy The Fall Guy and Zendaya-led sports romance Challengers dropped two spots each, with the Ryan Gosling ode to stunt performers landing at #4 with an extra $8.4 million dollars to its run and the Luca Guadagnino movie ending this set at #5 with an additional $2.9 million dollar gross. As of this week, both The Fall Guy and Challengerswill be available to stream at home, so a drop in viewership numbers at theaters is expected.

The unexpected performance this week was from the biopic Back to Black. The movie chronicles the life and career of world-famous singer Amy Winehouse, and one thing that certainly piqued moviegoers’ attention is how similar Marisa Abela looks to the late singer. But apparently, the similarity wasn’t enough to draw people in. The movie debuted at #6 with a timid $2.8 million gross. However, across the world, the reception was far more generous. The Sam Taylor-Johnson-directed (Fifty Shades of Grey) biopic made over $36 million internationally.

Next week, there is some serious competition coming at full speed and drenched in chrome to shake up the box office. After almost a decade in the making, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will finally premiere and early reviews are already raving about it. Will the other blockbusters stand a chance against the George Miller franchise? Stick with Collider to find out.
