Immaculate debuted on the aggregator site with a 64 percent fresh score, with a total of 12 reviews. For comparison’s sake, her romantic comedy crowd-pleasing hit, Anyone But You, is rotten at 55 percent, but still a hit with moviegoers with a more robust 87 percent audience score. Immaculate doesn’t have an audience score registered yet since it’s just beginning its press rollout, beginning with a debut at SXSW.

Horror has certainly been a more reliable player than romantic comedies in recent years, with studios mostly sending the once-guaranteed hit sub-genre to streaming. Sony Pictures took a big chance on Anyone But You by going all out on its theatrical release and relying on the emerging chemistry of its stars Sweeney and Glen Powell. At first, it looked like the film could be another rom-com misfire when it opened over the holiday season last year to just $6 million and a fourth-place finish.

However, despite the muted start, Anyone But You defied the odds and became a true word-of-mouth hit, increasing the following weekend to $8 million and then posting increases again the next two weekends with grosses of $8.7 million and $9.7 million. Its current domestic tally stands at $88.1 million and its global take is even more impressive at $212.1 million, all on a budget of just $25 million. To put things in perspective for the once struggling genre, Anyone But You is the first rom-com in half a decade to cross $200 million globally since 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians ($239 million), and the first R-rated romantic comedy to do so since 2016’s Bridget Jone’s Baby ($211 million).

Sweeney is hoping to find similar success in the horror genre with the release of Immaculate. Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, the film follows the devoutly religious Cecilia (Sweeney), who is offered a role at an illustrious convent in the Italian countryside. It’s not too long before it’s revealed that her new home holds some truly horrifying secrets. Released by Neon, the early social media reactions out of SXSW have been mostly positive, with Sweeney particularly earning raves for her performance.
