It is now almost a decade since Fifty Shades of Grey hit theaters and became both a financial success and a critical disaster, but for the film’s leads, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, the questions and discussions about the erotic trilogy have never gone away. During his new interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy, Sad Confused podcast, Dornan once again found himself discussing the film during a hilarious recollection of how he watched the movies for press engagements, and his explanation of a kid-friendly plot summary for the trilogy.

After discussing his current series The Tourist with Horowitz, the conversation naturally turned to what is still Donan’s most talked about role, the Fifty Shades trilogy. When asked how he would describe the story – if you ignore the sex – the actor burst out laughing and said:

Dornan was then asked if he had watched the movies, which led to him remembering the “awkward scenario” of being in a theater with just one other person, watching himself having sex on the big screen. He said:

“Yeah I had to [watch them] for press, because they take stuff out in edit, so you don’t want to talk about things that aren’t in there anymore. So, I think I watched them all by myself in a theater with like just a security guard. Which is a really, incredibly awkward scenario to find yourself in. When you’re simulating sex. Turning around, and being like, how am I doing? Believable? Good technique?”

Returning to his description of the movie, as both he and Horowitz struggled to keep their composure, Dornan was finally able to give his summary of what the Fifty Shades movies are all about.

Dornan:
Its boy meets girl. Teaches her some stuff. And end up…happy.

Horowitz:
Is that how you describe it to the kids, what daddy made?

Dornan:
Yeah, like Harry Met Sally vibes. Over three movies.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson Have Moved on From Fifty Shades

Despite interviews continuing to include some questions about the Fifty Shades movies, especially as the original release is heading towards its 10th anniversary, both Dornan and Johnson have broken away from the world of bondage and “Harry Met Sally vibes” to carve very different careers in Hollywood.

Although both stars have struggled to consistently find their movies on the right side of movie critics, Dornan has found much more success in the world of television. He currently stars in Season 2 of The Tourist on Netflix, which has followed up its Season 1 near-perfect performance with another solid round of reviews.

Johnson has most recently starred in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe offering, Madame Web, which unfortunately found itself almost surpassing her Fifty Shades sequels with its terrible reviews. However, Johnson’s previous work has delivered her a mostly positive run of films, including 2018’s Suspiria remake, 2023’s Daddio and the biographical The Disappearance of Shere Hite, which currently holds a 100% Tomatometer score.

For those, however, who feel the need to revisit the world of Red Rooms and horrendous reviews, the
Fifty Shades
trilogy is streaming on Max.
