Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball and star Owen Teague are hoping to launch a new Planet of the Apes trilogy with their upcoming sequel/prequel. Per a report by Comicbook.com, Ball has revealed that this year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will even set the stage for more…

“I don’t want to say we end on a cliffhanger, but we certainly end on a new door opening essentially that will allow us to keep going if we want it to, if we were successful enough to.”

Teague, meanwhile, who will lead Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as Noa, a young ape who slowly starts to discover the truth about the world in which the apes inhabit, added that “Wes has ideas” for future installments, while also teasing the conflict at the center of Kingdom.

“It’s going to be so hard to answer that question without giving anything away. Yes, there are. There are a lot of things that… I mean, obviously I have ideas, Wes has ideas. What I can say is that where we leave Noa in this film is he’s kind of got two opposing forces happening within him. There’s two philosophies that he’s really taken in on his journey, and I think it’s going to be exciting to see him grapple with that and find out. Because this sort of puts him in a position to be a leader, this film, like Caesar. I think seeing what kind of effect Noa’s going to have on Apes as a whole and on the legacy of Apes is something that I’m really curious about and I think it could go a couple ways, and I think there’s a lot of room to have Noa takes some really interesting turns.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Is Due to Land in Theaters in May

Following on from the recent, hugely successful Planet of the Apes trilogy, which is comprised of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and finally War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (perhaps they should consider shortening these titles somehow?) will breathe new life into the franchise.

“Set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.”
