Knives Out 3 to Film This Year for Netflix

Summary

  • Knives Out 3 is set to be filmed later this year, with Daniel Craig returning as detective Benoit Blanc.
  • Details of the plot are unknown, but it is expected to be a murder mystery with an A-list ensemble cast.
  • Rian Johnson is excited to take a new direction creatively and not replicate the previous movies.

The third movie in director Rian Johnson’s Knives Out saga will reportedly film this year, according to a new report by Deadline. According to the report, Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman have chosen Katie McNeill to become a producer at their independent studio T-Street Productions, with the studio now gearing up to shoot Knives Out 3, which will see Daniel Craig return as private detective Benoit Blanc.

As per the report, Johnson will film Knives Out 3 for Netflix “later this year,” with the project ser to once again be written and directed by Johnson following the critical hits Knives Out in 2019 and the sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022.

Likely to be another murder mystery that only Benoit Blanc can solve, and in the vein of the Agatha Christie stories of old, nothing is yet known about the specific plot of Knives Out 3. However, much like its predecessors, we can no doubt expect Craig to be surrounded by an ensemble cast of A-list talent. All of them suspects.

The last audiences saw of Benoit Blanc was in 2022’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which finds the master sleuth returning to peel back the layers in an all-new whodunit. The sequel finds the intrepid detective at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles.

Starring a stellar ensemble that includes Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami…, The Many Saints of Newark), Janelle Monáe (Hidden Figures, Antebellum), Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Kmock at the Cabin), Madelyn Cline (Boy Erased, Outer Banks), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone, Moon Knight), and Edward Norton (Fight Club), Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was a critical hit and received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 95th Academy Awards.

Hell, any of them could have done it.

Development on Knives Out 3 was delayed by last year’s writers’ strike, but Johnson has since said he is working at “full force.”

“It’s coming along. I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.”

While details remain under wraps, Johnson has teased a change in tone and theme when compared to the two Knives Out movies so far.

“What was exciting about doing [Glass Onion] was the notion of trying to emulate Christie with a completely new story. I’m starting to work on the third movie now, and that’s also what’s got me creatively jazzed: I don’t have to replicate the last movie at all. The goal is to strike out in a completely new direction tonally and thematically.”

Both Knives Out and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are available to stream on Netflix.
