As the era of video game adaptations continues, another project has been announced, with Atlanta‘s Lakeith Stanfield eyed to star in the project. Video game adaptations have taken over the superhero genre as Hollywood’s new go-to moneymaker, following the recent success of Netflix’s Castlevania, HBO’s The Last of Us, and Prime Video’s Fallout.
Via Deadline, Di Bonaventura Pictures, who previously produced Transformers, Constantine, G.I. Joe, and Madame Web, is developing a new movie based on the indie video game El Paso, Elsewhere. The report also states that Di Bonaventura Pictures is looking at Lakeith Stanfield to star in and produce the project.
Released in 2023 by developers Strange Scaffold, El Paso, Elsewhere follows a vampire hunter who must fight his way through a horde of blood-sucking creatures, werewolves, and fallen angels, to stop his ex-lover (a vampire) from destroying the world. The game draws visual inspiration from Marvel’s classic Blade comics, with gameplay inspired by The Matrix-style bullet time and the Max Payne series of games. The official description from the report reads:
‘James Savage (Stanfield), who while recovering from a toxic relationship, confronts both his inner demons and enigmatic ex-girlfriend, Janet, before she executes a world-ending ritual. James navigates her reality-bending universe of ethereal monsters while facing the truth of his own addictions and skewed sense of self-worth, learning that the only route to love is through healing.’
No other information has been released about the project. The release window is currently unconfirmed.
Upcoming Video Game Movies and Series
El Paso, Elsewhere is just one of many video game adaptations being announced in the genre’s current boom. 2024 has already seen the release of Prime Video’s Fallout, with Paramount+’s Knuckles set to release in just a few days on April 26. This year also sees Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie (written by The Last of Us‘s Craig Mazin), the hotly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Netflix’s animated Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series (with Hayley Atwell voicing the titular explorer), all releasing later in the year.
El Paso, Elsewhere is also the second video game adaptation to be announced in the last week. Comedy Central has greenlit a 10-episode animated comedy based on the cult-classic video game franchise Golden Axe, with Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi, Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Carl Tart all lending their voices to the new series.
