Miranda Cosgrove Says iCarly Needs to Find Closure with a Movie

Summary

  • Miranda Cosgrove said that if iCarly can find some closure after its cliffhanger ending, it’s going to be with a movie.
  • Cosgrove shared fans’ questions: “I want to know who Carly’s mother is.”
  • The revival series explored more adult themes and addressed character developments.

A year after the iCarly revival’s cancelation, fans are still waiting for closure following that massive cliffhanger ending. Well, as it turns out, they have good reason to hold on to hope — except this time around, fans may just be seeing Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) and friends on the silver screen.

Cosgrove spoke with ET about her hopes for closure for iCarly, which was canceled in 2023. The series finale ended with Carly and Freddie (Nathan Kress) considering marriage just as Carly’s long-absent mother arrived back on the scene. “Maybe, hopefully, someday, we’ll still do it,” Cosgrove said. “I feel like it would probably be more along the lines of maybe a movie, that would kind of wrap it all up or something like that. So that’s what I’m hoping for.”

Cosgrove assured fans that she was also curious about Carly’s mom, and expressed interest in further exploring the character. “I want to know who Carly’s mother is as much as [fans do],” Cosgrove said. “It seems like a lot of people were hoping to see that.” Carly’s mother was never featured in the original series, and most fans had assumed the character was deceased. But in the series finale, it was revealed that Carly’s mom was alive and well, having abandoned her family several years prior. The character remained faceless, however, being just off-screen.

iCarly originally ran from 2007 to 2012 on Nickelodeon. The show proved to be a monster hit for the network, and it lasted for 109 episodes over six seasons. The show was given a proper send-off in the form of “iGoodbye”, an episode about Carly deciding whether to move overseas with her father. At the end of the episode, Carly does, in fact, decide to move away to Paris, leaving her friends (and podcast) behind.

Fans were delighted when Paramount+ ordered a revival series which premiered in 2021. This time around, Carly was depicted as returning to Seattle to restart her podcast and rekindle old relationships. Cosgrove was given far more creative control in this series, which was different from the original in a number of ways. Famously, the character of Sam Puckett (Jeanette McCurdy) was replaced by Laci Mosley’s Harper Bettencourt, following McCurdy’s retirement from acting. While the character was missed, however, fans came to accept the character’s absence following the release of McCurdy’s tell-all book.

The revival series also chose to focus on more adult subjects, befitting the audience’s growth since the original series had concluded. Whereas the original iCarly was rated for kids, the revival had more of a PG feel to it. Now that Carly and Freddie are considering getting married, and Carly’s mom has returned following an estrangement from her family, any potential movie could likely focus on even heavier subjects.
