15 Palm Trees in the Snow (2015)

Warner Bros.

Directed by Fernando González Molina, Palm Trees in the Snow is a Spanish romance movie with a hint of suspense and a lot of drama. It is adapted from a novel of the same name written by Luz Gabás and it centers around Clarence, a young woman who travels to Africa in search of the truth about her father’s mysterious death after she discovers a peculiar letter written by him. Her fate intertwines with that of Killian, who grew up in a Spanish colony in Africa, and the two unexpectedly fall in love.

A Story of Fated Romance

Palm Trees in the Snow is a breathtaking story of love set in two timelines – one in the present day and another against a vivid historical backdrop. Its sweeping romance between the characters explores themes of pain and loss as well as cultural divides. The film particularly resonates with fans of My Fault because of its shocking reveals and elements connected to the characters’ pasts. Moreover, the incredible performances by Mario Casas and Adriana Ugarte also make it a critical and commercial success. Rent on Apple TV.

14 The Summer We Lived (2020)

The Summer We Lived
Warner Bros.

The Summer We Lived stars Javier Rey, Blanca Suárez, and Pablo Molinero in the lead roles. The former plays Gonzalo, an architect who wants to build a winery for a customer named Hernán. Entwined with them is the latter’s fiancee. As a love triangle develops between them, they experience more than just romance. Meanwhile, in the present day, a journalist named Isabel investigates the truth about their story through an obituary she accidentally finds.

Cathartic, Romantic, and Compelling

Much like My Fault, this romantic drama uses the characters’ past as something that links their fate together. Despite the events of the film having occurred in 1958, it is told from the perspective of a third person forty years into the future, in 1998, which makes the retelling more intimate and interesting. The movie is directed by Carlos Sedes, who wisely keeps romance and the story’s heart, letting the final moment of catharsis shine through with grace. Stream on Max and Prime Video.

13 The Boy Next Door (2015)

The Boy Next Door
Universal Pictures

Arriving with the promise of delivering “campy thrills” but steering in a different direction, The Boy Next Door is a psychological drama that centers around newly separated Claire who spends the night with her son Kevin’s friend and her neighbor – 19-year-old Noah. Realizing it was a mistake, Claire decides to end it, but it’s too late because Noah has already begun spiraling out of control because of his obsession with her.

For the Lopez Lovers

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t a fan of My Fault or sensual romances, because The Boy Next Door has Jennifer Lopez and her phenomenal personality to appeal to the viewers and churn up enough intrigue to keep you glued to your seats for an hour and a half. The movie is a subtle yet jarring examination of human nature and obsession. Lopez brings her experience while newcomer Ryan Guzman is equally charming yet terrifying as the evil boy next door. Overall, the movie is a cautionary tale as well as an exhilarating thriller. Stream on Max.

After

Release Date
April 11, 2019

Adapted from a story first published by Anna Todd on Wattpad in 2013, After is the inaugural film in a series of romantic dramas. In it, Tessa Young is a dedicated student and dutiful daughter who has her entire life mapped out and revised. That is until she meets Hardin Scott, the mysterious bad boy who turns her entire world upside down. As Tessa’s attraction towards Hardin grows, so does his fear of commitment, which leads to Tessa questioning everything.

Deliciously Soapy Romance

After breathes new life into the romance genre by adding layers of complexity to its central couple. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin share stunning chemistry, and they draw out the emotions and vulnerabilities of Tessa and Hardin’s world with ease. While the first story reveals their pulsating romance and offers insights into relationships, the three following films, namely After We Collided, After We Fell, and After Ever Happy, develop the story further and are perfect to binge if you loved My Fault. Stream on Netflix.

11 Along For the Ride (2022)

Written and directed by Sofia Alvarez, Netflix’s romantic drama finds two people with one thing in common: insomnia. Auden is staying with her father during the summer before she leaves for college. There, she meets Eli, a fellow insomniac. Auden and Eli’s meeting starts a nightly rendezvous away from the small town’s prying eyes. More than just a fun summer fling, their time together shows Auden there’s a world far beyond her restricted life.

Heartwarming Coming-of-Age Fare

Along for the Ride is a heartwarming celebration of youth; its focus centered on self-discovery, first love, and taking chances. With a brilliant soundtrack and the backdrop of sun-soaked shores, watching the chemistry between Auden and Eli is truly satisfying. When compared to My Fault, there is an air of nostalgia for moments that feel like anything is possible. The film’s most memorable scene may be the pair’s passionate kiss, followed up by entrancing golden fireworks from above. Along For the Ride stars Emma Pasarow and Belmont Cameli. Stream on Netflix

10 Crash (1996)

Crash movie David Cronenberg
New Line Cinema

A Cannes Film Festival premiere and an odd film to place on this (but appropriate nonetheless), Crash is written and directed by David Cronenberg. It fascinatingly interweaves the stories of its main characters. Film producer James Ballard is in an open but unenthusiastic marriage with Catherine. After suffering a car crash, he gets involved with a man named Dr. Robert Vaughan and frequents his cult meetings, where all the people are sexually aroused by witnessing or recreating car wrecks. As the film explores the lure of it all, we see James’ relationship with Catherine improves.

A Great Next Step Into the Erotic Thriller Genre

Despite creating a buzz with filmmakers and churning a lot of controversy, Crash was still praised by the critics, with Roger Ebert giving it 3.5 out of 4 stars and calling it “challenging, courageous and original.” When compared to My Fault, the movie may be a little heavier but it still is a standout in the erotic thriller genre because of its rich and layered characters and unflinching portrayal of intimacy. That said, Crash is nothing but a delight for Cronenberg fans.

9 Amar (2017)

María Pedraza and Pol Monen in Amar
Netflix

A Spanish-language romance co-written and directed by Esteban Crespo, Amar is about a demanding parent who interferes with love. However, the passion between Laura and Carlos is all too real; they not only feel consumed by one another but also comforted. Laura is conflicted, though, about herself because of her overbearing mother, who stands in the way of their happiness. The couple that once believed that young love could overcome everything and plotted a way around the ever-present obstacles become dispassionate a year later.

A Tale of Complex Love Over Time

A contemporary romance that reveals the harsh truth about how love transforms over time, Amar stars María Pedraza and Pol Monen in the lead roles. The latter was praised for his utterly captivating performance and earned a nomination for Best Actor at the Goya Awards. The film’s parallels with My Fault are present within complex character relationships. Where Amar really takes off is its exploration of what happens when passion, under the guise of young love, fades. The differences after just one year are striking and present an unexpected tonal shift for this underappreciated project. Stream on Netflix.

Through My Window

Through My Window

Release Date
February 4, 2022

Director
Marçal Forés

Cast
Pilar Castro , Clara Galle , Julio Peña

Netflix once again finds a place on the list thanks to its growing curation of romantic dramas. Through My Window, an adaptation of Ariana Godoy’s novel, doesn’t shy away from a literary element. Instead, its main character, Raquel, acts as a narrator throughout the story. It’s through her eyes that viewers learn about the love story between herself and neighbor Ares. Despite barely knowing him or having never once talked to him, Raquel finds herself feeling strongly for Ares. She begins to go out of her way to open her heart and make him fall in love with her.

Melodramatic and Emotional in the Best Ways

Through My Window is an engaging story that reminds one to draw a line between passion and obsession, which is something My Fault explores as well. The emotions run deep, with Julio Peña and Clara Galle delivering genuinely understated performances. The pair’s romance interestingly enough starts out with Wi-Fi, from there they experience interactions that become crucial later in the film. Plus, their nerve-wracking journey towards building something true is just as exciting. The title’s popularity led to a sequel, 2022’s Through My Window: Across The Sea, and a third installment in 2024. Stream on Netflix.

7 Sorry If I Call You Love (2014)

Sorry If I Call You Love
Capelight Pictures

The 2014 film looks at what happens when a man finds love with an unlikely source. Sorry If I Call You Love’s premise is set around Alex, a character whose life feels seemingly mundane until a heartbreaking event sets him on a path toward being single. When everything seems hopeless, the character discovers romance occurs at any age regardless of what the world thinks of it. His rebound could be something special or prove to be just another step towards getting over heartbreak.

Opposites Attract

Joaquín Llamas directs this adaptation of Federico Moccia’s popular novel. Staying true to the source material, the movie navigates the delicate difference between devotion and disorder with the help of its protagonists. Despite their opposing personalities, Paloma Bloyd and Daniele Liotti make a great pair. Llamas’ authentic direction draws out the best in them and makes the film more fanciful and appealing than it would have been otherwise. Like My Fault, Sorry If I Loved You provokes your thoughts about life, relationships, and matters of the heart. Rent on Apple TV.

6 Sounds Like Love (2021)

A woman’s quest to move on is at the heart of Sounds Like Love. The film sees Maca head out in search of her dreams when a former relationship returns to haunt her. Facing her past and the prospect of renewed love creates a conundrum for Maca and the character must make a life-altering decision. She must decide if her irreplaceable bond with old flame Leo is sturdy enough for love, or if pursuing that passion would destroy everything she has.

A Satisfying Emotional Arc

Like many other titles on the list, the rom-com project is a novel adaptation. In this case, the original material is not one, but two novels from author Elísabet Benavent. María Valverde stars as Maca with Álex González co-starring as Leo. Sounds Like Love is not afraid to show how messy love can get, but it retains the mafic through emotive songs and relatable characters. In the same vein as My Fault, it delivers a story that is honest, poignant, moving, and extremely intense. Stream on Netflix

What happens after the night together creates questions and ideas about what might happen to the pair’s future.

A One Night Wonder

Rome in Rome is directed by Julio Medem, and the erotic romantic comedy has several elements working for itself. Like the fact that it brings the Spanish art of storytelling into the global game and makes it accessible to the mainstream audience. Additionally, viewers can expect comedic elements interspersed with the drama’s overwhelming themes. Elena Anaya and Natasha Yarovenko star as the couple at the heart of this multi-layered story; it’s also a phenomenal start for the director, who counts the project as an English language debut. Swoon-Worthy Period Romance

Adapted from the historic drama The Madness of Love, Mad Love won quite some acclaim in domestic markets and became one of the few Spanish-language movies to appeal to international audiences as well. Critics praised the film’s period authenticity and attention to detail with Pilar López de Ayala and Daniele Liotti’s spectacular performances earning claps as well. Mad Love also received three Goya awards, including Best Picture for Pilar. Rent on Apple TV

Her fight against Salavador’s world is a stunning change for someone who has never known the word no.

A Romance About Living in the Moment

Directed by Bruno Ascenzo, it brings nuance into the characters’ journeys and ultimately conveys that even the toughest hearts can melt with time and that all we have sometimes is the present. Eric in Just a Little Chemistry
Hoopla

A dream doesn’t turn out quite as planned in director Alfonso Albacete’s film Just a Little Chemistry. The rom-com sees a woman realize her fantasies by beginning a relationship with her favorite TV star. What starts as the perfect scenario soon becomes less than wonderful thanks to a harsh reality. The film’s soundtrack features “Sólo química.” The spirited song, performed by Fangoria, comes from writers Alaska, Nacho Canut, and Juan Manuel Sueiro.

Charming, Sweet, and Charismatic

Just a Little Chemistry has a precise theme – that chemistry and true love are not one and the same thing. And that theme is fully realized because of the dynamic shared by Ana Fernández García and Rodrigo Guirao Díaz. While the more intense and passionate scenes of the movie draw parallels with My Fault, the sweet and subtle and sweet scenes remind you of romantic classics like Bridget Jones’ Diary or Pretty Woman. The good dialogue and superb soundtrack add texture to the drama. Stream on Hoopla.

1 Book of Love (2022)

The Hunger Gamesstar Sam Claflin steps into rom-com territory with Book of Love. The film follows a novelist whose latest book finds surprising success in Mexico. A subsequent book tour reveals the real reason for its overwhelming fame — a very different translation courtesy of Spanish translator Maria. What follows is a conflict between the two which ultimately sparks romantic feelings. Book of Love is directed by Analeine Cal y Mayor, who also co-wrote the film.

A Lush and Warm Rom-Com

Despite having an unoriginal premise, Analeine Cal y Mayor is an interesting movie to enjoy. As a cross-cultural comedy, it reminds you that what connects two people isn’t what’s on the surface but what lies beneath – empathy, sincerity, and the joy of knowing one another. Claflin is cast alongside Verónica Echegui and the two showcase terrific chemistry, enriching the predictable plot into a delight. Overall, the movie plays the “opposites attract” trope quite brilliantly. Stream on Prime Video
