Anti-fracking activist and justice leader David Braun recently passed away, leaving many heartbroken, including actor Mark Ruffalo. Braun’s demise was announced by Dr. Sandra Steingraber, an American biologist, author, and activist, on her X/Twitter account. Ruffalo appreciated Braun’s work, calling him one of the greatest activists of all time.

Braun was one of the co-founders of New Yorkers Against Fracking. Fracking is short for “hydraulic fracturing,” which is the process of involving the fracturing of rocks and rock formations in bedrock by injecting a specialized pressurized liquid. Braun was truly an icon who made a major impact on the world.

In a recent reply to Dr. Sandra Steingraber, actor Mark Ruffalo acknowledged the demise of Anti-fracking activist and justice leader David Braun. The actor wrote, “One of the all time greats. Thank you, Sandra.

Ruffalo is also known for being an activist. The actor was spotted at the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike, encouraging fellow actors and writers to work together to cut out Hollywood’s “fat cats” by making independent films and shows.

David Braun’s impact on the world is celebrated by those who stood by him. He gained popularity when he was in Oakland to organize communities against oil and gas drilling in California. As per Steingraber, he stood strong against the fossil fuel Goliaths. Apart from his anti-fracking movement, he also co-founded MoveOn.

It is important to understand why Braun and many others like him opposed Fracking. The technique damages the environment in many ways: from contaminating the groundwater to the air pollution caused by the big machines, the process is definitely not the best way to extract natural gas and oil from deep underground. By supporting Braun’s work, Ruffalo has made it clear that he also doesn’t support the practice.
