Despite Ritchie’s involvement in the new series, it appears that a new film installment is still very much a topic of consideration, particularly for producer Susan Downey.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Susan Downey clarified that although there are no concrete updates, the idea of bringing Holmes and Watson back to the big screen is a subject of frequent discussion. She said:
I mean, look, no, there’s no update, other than it’s still very much alive in our hearts. Every day we talk about, “What is the best next version of that?”
The challenge, as always, is to craft a tale worthy of the legendary detective and his loyal companion—a story that both respects their cinematic legacy but also brings something new and engaging for today’s viewers. Downey continued:
“Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I’m just like, “Can I get these guys back on screen together?”, it’s magic. There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.”

This new adaptation draws inspiration from Andy Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels, offering the untapped potential of Holmes’ youth. The series is spearheaded by Matthew Parkhill as the writer and showrunner, with the esteemed Guy Ritchie, who has previously entertained audiences with his unique take on the adult Holmes, also at the helm.

Set during Holmes’ time at Oxford University, the plot kicks off with a murder mystery that threatens his freedom and also sets him on a path that will define his future. At 19, Sherlock is depicted as raw and undisciplined, yet his sharp intellect and relentless pursuit of truth remain evident as he tackles his first case—an experience that thrusts him into a vast, globe-trotting conspiracy.
