A sequel to the box office dominating video game adaptation, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is happening, Nintendo has confirmed. During the recent Mario Day event held by the video game company, it was also revealed when The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 will land in theaters: April 3, 2026.

The confirmation of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 was made by Nintendo exec Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO/founder Chris Meledandri, with the sequel all set to once again bring together the talents of Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination to continue the adventures of Mario and Luigi.

Animation on The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is “beginning soon,” with the project described as “based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” You can check out what else Miyamoto had to say about the project below.

“We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories.

We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story.”

If a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. is greenlit, Jack Black has a pitch ready to go.

Alongside the movie’s description, there were further hints that the project could in fact be much more than just a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie and will instead further expand the world and the franchise as a whole.

“This time we’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further. We’ll let you know once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share more.”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Saw Record-Breaking Success at the Box Office

Based on the hugely popular video game franchise and featuring the beloved Nintendo characters, The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows the iconic Brooklyn plumbers and brothers Mario and Luigi as they are transported through a mysterious pipe to a magical new world. But when the siblings are separated, an epic adventure begins.

Directed by Aaron Horvath (The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie!) and Michael Jelenic (Lego DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League vs. Bizarro League), The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Guardians of the Galaxy and The Lego Movie star Chris Pratt as Mario, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and fellow The Lego Movie star Charlie Day as his brother, Luigi. The rest of the cast includes the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike.

While it was met with mixed reviews, The Super Mario Bros. Movie saw huge success at the box office, garnering $1.36 billion worldwide and earning the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated movie, as well as being the first movie based on a video game to gross over $1 billion.

So, it’s no wonder that Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination are looking to expand on such monumental success.
