Recently, the film’s director took to Instagram to share a snapshot with Ben Wang, the fresh face of the franchise, holding a clapboard, signaling the end of the shooting phase. This marks a significant milestone for the production, showing its readiness for the next stages leading up to its theatrical release.
The sixth Karate Kid movie intends to combine the classic elements from the original films with fresh perspective that are likely to attract a new generation of viewers. The latest installment introduces us to Li Fong, portrayed by Wang, who steps into the main role. The story both initiates a new saga and also ties back to the roots of the original series and the 2010 reboot.
The casting choices reflect a mix of familiar and new, with Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan returning to their iconic roles as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han, respectively. The legacy of the Karate Kid franchise continues to evolve, redefining its appeal for new generations while paying homage to its roots. Since its debut in 1984 with Ralph Macchio and the unforgettable Pat Morita, the series has explored different stories.
Ralph Macchio, who became synonymous with the character Daniel LaRusso, was at the heart of the first three films, released between 1984 and 1989. The narrative took a turn in 1994 with The Next Karate Kid, featuring Hilary Swank, where Morita reprised his role as Mr. Miyagi. The saga saw a modern reinterpretation in 2010 with Jaden Smith leading a loose remake, bringing a fresh perspective to the martial arts tale.
Expanding the Karate Kid universe, Cobra Kai, a series launched as a legacy sequel to the original films, has garnered high acclaim, connecting old fans and new through a deeper exploration of its original characters’ later lives. Despite its success and its roots deeply entrenched in the Karate Kid films, the creators of Cobra Kai have not extended their touch to the upcoming movie.
Jon Hurwitz, one of the minds behind Cobra Kai, clarified on X in 2022 the distinctions between the series and the new film. He said:
“The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well.”
While expressing interest in potentially crafting Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies in the future, Hurwitz noted that the upcoming film does not intertwine with the Cobra Kai storyline, although it does feature the return of Macchio’s LaRusso.
