The Last of Us is set to return to HBO for its second season in 2025, and we now have our first look at stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in their respective roles of Joel and Ellie. Premiering in 2023, The Last of Us quickly became a breakout hit, taking home numerous awards among heaps of critical acclaim. Based on the 2013 video game of the same name, the series follows a smuggler tasked with transporting a teenager who is immune to the Cordyceps infection across a post-apocalyptic wasteland in order to save humanity.

As per Variety, the new images of Pascal and Ramsey were unveiled during the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront presentation in New York City. They show a grizzled Pascal with longer hair than he had in the first season, and a concerned Ramsey holding tight to a shotgun. Check out the images below.

Filming for The Last of Us Season 2 is well underway in British Columbia, Canada, and is expected to wrap in August of this year. Aside from Pascal and Ramsey, returning cast members for the new season include Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley, while joining them on their epic journey will be Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart), Isabela Merced (Transformers: The Last Knight), Young Mazino (Beef), Ariela Barer (Runaways), Tati Gabrielle (Uncharted), Spencer Lord (Family Law) and Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick). Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Catherine O’Hara has also been confirmed to appear as a guest star.

The Last of Us Season 2 Will Build on Events From the Second Video Game

While the first season of The Last of Us followed the events that took place in the video game fairly accurately, the second season is expected to fall in line with what took place in ‘The Last of Us Part II,’ which was released in 2020. This includes the addition of new characters Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and Dina, who is Ellie’s love interest, portrayed by Isabela Merced. Speaking with Collider last month, Merced says she’s excited for fans to see her chemistry with Bella Ramsey.

“I’m so excited for people to see my chemistry with Bella. Bella and I have so much chemistry. From the first day, it was there. There’s no work to be done. I really respect Bella. I just saw Catherine Called Birdy and Bella has such range and just an honesty about their work. I’m learning so much. I’m very honored to be here.”

The Last of Us became such a commercial hit that it paved the way for other video game adaptations such as Twisted Metal and Fallout to also find success on both Peacock and Prime Video. Numerous other game properties are currently in development, including ‘Bioshock,’ ‘God of War,’ ‘Alan Wake,’ and ‘Horizon.’ Whether they manage to find the same success as The Last of Us remains to be seen, but the series has certainly helped set the blueprint when it comes to what fans are looking for.
