Ferrari (December 25)

When you think of luxurious cars, chances are you think of Ferrari. Michael Mann returns from an eight-year absence with a biopic about the one and only Enzo Ferrari: the man responsible for one of the most recognizable Italian sports car brands in the world. Adam Driver plays Ferrari, a former professional racer who, amid domestic troubles and the death of his beloved son, places his own team into the 1957 Mille Miglia auto race. Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Sarah Gordon, Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey make up the rest of our cast. The film is based on Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine, which was originally written by Brock Yates in 1991.

Why You Should See Ferrari

Director Michael Mann is an intriguing fit for this tense biographical film. His crime thrillers like Heat and Thief drew immense critical praise and gargantuan box office returns, and when you pair him up with Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman, The Last Duel), you’re bound to have a fantastic time. The Boys in the Boat (December 25)

An emotional sports drama a la Chariots of Fire, the biographical film The Boys in the Boat follows the rowing team from the University of Washington, which represented the United States during the infamous Berlin Olympic Games of 1936. The team was special in that it consisted of generally working-class athletes, compared to the usual elitist rowers who participated in the games (as personified by the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network).

Why You Should See The Boys in the Boat

George Clooney is an underrated director, able to explore a variety of genres with stylistic flourishes and a liberal sensibility. Films like Good Night and Good Luck and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind are intentionally bold in their aesthetics, and investigate the murkier issues of 20th century American politics. Night Swim (January 5)

Following the success of their killer doll film M3GAN, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse team up once more for Night Swim. Based on the 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, we follow the story of Ray Waller (Wyatt Russell), a former professional baseball player whose degenerative illness has pushed him into early retirement. After moving into a new home with his family, however, he aspires to play ball once more. He turns to the house’s swimming pool to provide physical therapy, with the added benefit of providing fun for his two children. Unfortunately, the home’s dark past may drag the whole family beneath the water’s surface. James Wan and Jason Blum are attached as producers, with Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle, and Gavin Warren rounding out our cast.

Why You Should See Night Swim

Bryce McGuire returns to both write and direct this feature-length adaptation of his original short film. Wyatt Russell previously starred in Julius Avery’s excellent Overlord, and Kerry Condon received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in The Banshees of Inisherin. There’s a good amount of talent attached to Night Swim, which will hopefully kick off another year of terrific horror in 2024. Mean Girls (January 12)

A movie leads to a Broadway musical, which leads to a movie. That’s the journey of Mean Girls: The Musical, which takes Tina Fey’s Broadway adaptation and turns it into a twee remake for a new generation. In the film, new student Cady Heron is welcomed to the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George and her minions Gretchen and Karen. However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels, she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs.

Why You Should See Mean Girls: The Musical

High school culture seemingly changes with each new generation, but some universal truths stay the same, and Mean Girls is set up in such a way as to reflect the new changes while also tapping into the constants (cliques and hierarchy, hormones and horniness, envy and anxiety). This new film features some epic musical numbers and a great cast, including Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Bebe Wood, Avantika, Christopher Briney, Auli’i Cravalho, Ashley Park, and Jaquel Spivey, not to mention the legends — Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Tina Fey, and Tim Meadows. The Beekeeper (January 12)

David Ayer is back, and this time, he’s brought Jason Statham with him. The Beekeeper sees Statham playing the role of Mr. Clay, a former operative of the “Beekeepers” organization. After becoming a traditional beekeeper himself, Clay’s life turns for the worse when his beloved neighbor falls for a disastrous phishing scam, ultimately leading to her premature death. In a bid for revenge, Clay’s efforts to find those responsible will quickly escalate into a series of explosions, gunshots, and blows to the head. Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons join the rest of our main cast.

Why You Should See The Beekeeper

David Ayer certainly has his own unique directorial style. Though his films like Bright and End of Watch may have polarized critics, his screenplays for Training Day and The Fast and the Furious showcase a level of talent perfect for an over-the-top action thriller. Jason Statham is a fitting lead as well, having previously performed similar roles in films like Transporter, Crank, Spy, and, of course, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Watch in Theaters

The Book of Clarence (January 12)

With Jay-Z attached as a producer, The Book of Clarence has certainly turned heads. Featuring an ensemble cast made up of LaKeith Stanfield, Omar Sy, Anna Diop, and David Oyelowo, this biblical dramedy tells the story of Clarence (Stanfield), a downtrodden man living in the middle of Jerusalem circa 33 A.D. Though he’s quick with his wit, he finds himself struggling to overcome his immense debts. When the popularity of Jesus Christ sparks an idea in his head, Clarence will have to forge his own path to enlightenment as he attempts to join Christ’s Apostles. Jeymes Samuel, also known as The Bullitts, directed, wrote, and produced this film, having previously directed the 2021 Western The Harder They Fall.

Why You Should See The Book of Clarence

The Book of Clarence is arguably one of the most refreshing concepts for a film in 2024 so far. Aside from its focus on religious concepts and satirical elements, there’s a surprising mix of differing ideas on offer here. It’s a film with a predominantly Black cast, reflecting on established biblical tales from a modern viewpoint without diving too deep into either parody or direct adaptation. Like Samuel’s previous film, it transforms established ideas into something bold and new, presenting his unique vision in a way you might’ve not seen before. Wanted Man (January 17)

Dolph Lundgren’s latest film has him both in the director’s chair and in front of the camera. Wanted Man sees Lundgren starring as Travis Johansen, a talented police officer who must safely escort an important eyewitness after a cartel shooting jeopardizes her safety. However, nothing is ever really as it seems, and a harrowing discovery will put the two in the crosshairs of competing forces across the Mexico-United States border. Christina Villa, Kelsey Grammer, Michael Paré, and Roger Cross star alongside Lundgren in this tense action film.

Why You Should See Wanted Man

Wanted Man looks to be a film that knows exactly what it is: a grizzled, no-nonsense action thriller with one of the most legendary action heroes in its title role. Being a film directed by Lundgren, he has complete control over the film’s creative elements, promising a compelling journey full of violent action and tense intrigue. Interestingly, Lundgren’s age plays a role in his character here, as his physical limits will be put to the absolute test against an all-encompassing threat. Sunrise (January 19)

Just as the winds turn bitterly cold in the middle of winter, so too does the blood spilled in Sunrise, an exciting vampire film directed by Andrew Baird. Alex Pettyfer stars as Fallon, a man cursed to roam the night as a monstrous bloodsucker. Upon visiting a quiet rural town, he finds himself caught between two worlds as a friendly family welcomes him into their arms. Alongside Pettyfer, Guy Pearce stars as Reynolds, the malevolent demagogue of the town Fallon makes his new home in.

Why You Should See Sunrise

With a screenplay penned by Ronan Blaney, whose prior credits include A Good Woman Is Hard to Find, Sunrise is a promising vampire thriller to kick off the new year. Guy Pearce dazzles more often than not in the numerous films he appears in, with his villainous role in Sunrise promising more of the same. I.S.S. (January 19)

Keeping the horror train going, we have to ask: what could possibly be scarier than the depths of outer space? Gabriela Cowpethwaite thought the same, as her space thriller I.S.S. is debuting in 2024. Based on its namesake, I.S.S. takes place on the International Space Station, wherein a group of astronauts are placed in the middle of an impossible situation. When a world-spanning conflict breaks out on Earth, each astronaut is given a unique order from their home country: take over the space station by any means necessary. Ariana DeBose, Chris Messina, John Gallagher Jr., Maria Mashkova, Costa Ronin, and Pilou Asbaek star in this spacefaring thriller.

Why You Should See I.S.S.

With impressive VFX, an intriguing premise, and a surprisingly captivating cast, I.S.S. will surely capture the attention of anyone looking for isolated thrillers. Cowperthwaite previously rose to fame via her 2013 documentary film, Blackfish, but I.S.S. demonstrates her ability to bring palpable tension to a fictionalized narrative. It’s a harrowing “what if” scenario given life on the big screen, with plenty to look forward to in its brief runtime. Origin (January 19)

Ava DuVernay writes, directs, and produces Origin, a heartfelt biographical film. Taking inspiration from Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, we follow the journey of Isabel (Aunjanue Ellis) after she handles a morose tragedy. As a way to come to terms with what happened, she sets out to investigate the potential links between racism in the United States and the wider utilization of caste systems — hierarchy systems based on inclusion and exclusion — found throughout the globe. Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Nick Offerman, Niecy Nash-Betts, Finn Wittrock, Jasmine Cephas-Jones, Connie Nielsen, and Blair Underwood also star in this beautiful biography.

Why You Should See Origin

If you haven’t read Wilkerson’s original book, Origin may very well be an excellent appetizer prior to diving in. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor will deliver a tremendous performance, having previously starred in brilliant films like The Help and If Beale Street Could Talk. Ava DuVernay’s strong suit also lies in her incredible biographical projects, with highlights like When They See Us and the documentary 13th being notable highlights of her filmography. Sometimes I Think About Dying (January 26)

A film directed by Rachel Lambert, this romantic dramedy sees Daisy Ridley in the lead role as Fran, an everyday office worker who quietly struggles to form new relationships. As she daydreams of her own demise, she inadvertently makes a new employee at work laugh. From there, a blossoming relationship may finally pull her out of her grim rut. Sometimes I Think About Dying is a film that seemingly touches the heart of downtrodden white-collar workers everywhere. Miller’s Girl (January 26)

Martin Freeman stars in Miller’s Girl, a dramatic thriller written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett. Freeman stars alongside Jenna Ortega as the eponymous Jonathan Miller, a teacher. Ortega plays Cairo Sweet, a student of Miller, as one specific writing assignment leads the two down a complex, winding path. Along with Freeman and Ortega, Dagmara Dominczyk, Bashir Salahuddin, and Gideon Adlon make up the film’s modest cast.

After making waves in Wednesday and Finestkind, Jenna Ortega has been on a roll when it comes to her individual performances. Best Movies Releasing in February

Argylle (February 2)

Matthew Vaughn, who previously directed films like Kingsman: The Secret Service and Snatch, returns to the big screen with Argylle. A spy-themed action comedy, Argylle tells the story of Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), an introverted woman whose profession is writing espionage novels. However, she’ll be forcibly ripped out of her shell when her writings draw the attention of a real-life crime syndicate. Now firmly in their sights, Elly is forced to team up with Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a real-life spy, in order to both save her own skin and put a stop to this covert threat. Henry Cavill, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, John Cena, and Bryan Cranston are also attached to the film’s cast.

Why You Should Watch Argylle

With a fun premise such as this, Argylle is sure to be entertaining. Vaughn’s filmography is loaded with stylish action films, and given his extensive history with the Kingsman franchise, he’s a natural fit for an espionage story of this caliber. The all-star cast attached to this film are an additional selling point, with Henry Cavill coming as close as he can to portraying James Bond without actually donning the official moniker. Lisa Frankenstein (February 9)

After making her mark on the world of horror with Jennifer’s Body, Diablo Cody returns once more with the screenplay for Lisa Frankenstein. Directed by Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams and the voice of Kuvira in The Legend of Korra, this exciting horror comedy takes us back to the late 1980s. Lisa Swallows, played by Kathryn Newton, is your average goth girl with big aspirations. When she reanimates a corpse from the Victorian era via a dangerous lightning storm, she may finally find love as she assembles the man of her dreams from whatever spare parts she can find. Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, and Carla Gugino are also attached to the film’s cast.

Why You Should See Lisa Frankenstein

Horror and comedy is usually a winning combination, and given Zelda Williams’ relation to one of the greatest comedians in history, we’re inclined to believe Lisa Frankenstein will be a hit. Its morbid premise gives way to neon coloring and period-appropriate fashion, with Lisa’s newfound friend allowing for fantastic physical comedy. Kathryn Newton also looks to be a compelling lead, having played notable roles in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Freaky. Watch in Theaters

Madame Web (February 14)

Madame Web is the next big superhero movie that isn’t tied to the MCU. Instead, this adventure is firmly affixed to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with S.J. Clarkson in the director’s chair. Madame Web features Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic whose incredible psychic abilities allow her to see future events taking place within the “spider world.” She, alongside Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), will find themselves battling fate itself as a deadly foe proceeds to track them down.

Why You Should See Madame Web

Aside from celebrating the lengthy history of the numerous Spider-Women over the years, Madame Web looks to be an exciting entry in Sony’s growing Spider-Man Universe. While previous films in the universe focused more on heroes and villains separate from everyone’s favorite web slinger, Madame Web aims to return us to what made the Spider-Man films so entertaining to begin with. Drive-Away Dolls (February 23)

Ethan Coen of the Coen brothers has returned to the big screen once more with his latest feature-length film, Drive-Away Dolls. A road trip comedy, Drive-Away Dolls tells the story of Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an adventurous woman recovering after a bad breakup. She, along with her best friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), opt to go on a quick road trip to Tallahassee to soothe their tired spirits. Unfortunately, the trip is interrupted when they stumble upon a group of bumbling criminals. Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Beanie Feldstein, and Matt Damon are also attached to this film’s cast.

Why You Should See Drive-Away Dolls

Minus Ethan Coen’s Jerry Lee Lewis documentary, which was released in 2022, Drive-Away Dolls is both his first narrative film since The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, in addition to his first narrative film without the involvement of his brother, Joel Coen. After an extended break from filmmaking, this exciting story will mark his big return to the world of cinema, with the film’s script being co-written by Ethan Coen himself alongside Tricia Cooke. The film will be additionally edited by Cooke, with cinematography provided by Ari Wegner, whose prior credits include 2023’s Eileen and 2016’s Lady Macbeth. According to Ethan Coen himself, it’ll be different compared to previous Coen films. Watch in Theaters
