The Sims Movie Officially in Development at Amazon MGM

Prepare to witness grown adults drowning in ladder-less swimming pools, because The Sims movie is officially in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Per Variety, the movie will be firmly rooted in The Sims universe, including countless nods to the lore of the beloved gaming franchise. Kate Herron (Loki) is currently slated to direct the project, co-writing the script with Briony Redman.Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was reportedly a big inspiration for the project, which makes sense as Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is producing The Sims.

No specific plot details have been confirmed or released so far, as the project is in the infant stages of development. The Sims movie has been rumored for some time now, so fans are excited to finally see the project get the official go-ahead. It will be interesting to see what Herron does with the movie, given that The Sims is famously a storyless, sandbox game, where players take control of their Sims’ lives without a pre-set script.

“As we approach the incredible milestone of 25 years of The Sims – which is an incredible feat of longevity in today’s world of entertainment and pop culture – I am thrilled to confirm that The Sims will be coming to the big screen,” said EA Entertainment president, Laura Miele. The announcement came among other updates to The Sims franchise, including that The Sims 5 won’t be released anytime soon. EA Vice President Kate Gorman offered some details about what thfans can expect from the film, saying:

“What I will tell you is it’s very much rooted in The Sims universe. What we want is to have a truly authentic ‘Sims’ experience brought to a theatrical release.”

The Sims Movie Will Feature Tons of Easter Eggs

The Sims has one of the most dedicated fan bases in all of gaming, with millions of users playing the hit life-simulator at any given moment. As players raise their own families and embark on exciting careers within the game, it becomes tempting to play devilish pranks. The notorious ladder-less swimming pool (which hilariously causes Sims to drown in the game, due to their inability to climb out of the pool) is one of many Easter eggs that will be making its way into the movie. Additionally, the iconic Freezer Bunny will make its big-screen debut in the movie. Gorman explained:

“There will be Freezer Bunnies. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized any of those details. But that’s the idea, is to say that it lives within this space. It’s a nod to all of the amazing play and creation and fun that people have had over the last 25 years within The Sims.”

The inhabitants of the Sims world also speak their own language, known as Simlish. When the project was first rumored, fans campaigned for the movie to be written entirely in Simlish, with English subtitles. Surprisingly, Gorman isn’t completely ruling out the idea. “It’s fun. It’s a great idea, and it’s something we’ll definitely talk about.”
