  • The possibility of another
    X-Files
revival excites Carter if original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are on board.

The creator behind The X-Files, Chris Carter, has revealed that he has had conversations with filmmaker Ryan Coogler about the upcoming reboot of the iconic sci-fi mystery series, and has given the project his “blessing.” Speaking with The Wrap, Carter says that Coogler and his creative team have got some “good ideas” and the series will be led by “a diverse cast.”

“I’m not supposed to be talking about it, according to Disney. But I’ll tell you, yes. I’ve had a conversation with him. Yes, he likes to go with a diverse cast. And he’s got some good ideas.”

However, while Carter has had conversations with Coogler, he will not be involved in The X-Files reboot. Continuing, Carter says he will only be part of the show as a “cheerleader,” but does plan to watch the new version when it hits screens.

“I wouldn’t. Only as a cheerleader. They don’t need my blessing. 20th Century Fox and Disney owns the show. They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.

Sure. Yeah. I’m curious. It’s not the easiest show to write because of the subject matter. It’s not like “Law & Order,” where you have the crime of the week. You have to imagine “what if” and that “what if” is oftentimes hard to tackle.”

The Californication star speaks to MovieWeb about working with David Lynch, befriending Meg Ryan, and doing something different with his new movie.

Beginning back in 1993, The X-Files revolves around FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who investigate the titular “X-Files,” looking into marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena.

While the influential series ended its main run back in 2002, The X-Files has been revived before, in both serial and feature-length format. A shorter tenth season was released in 2016, with an eleventh season coming out in 2018 following the success of season 10. A movie, The X‑Files: I Want to Believe, was released in theaters in 2008, with the franchise having also spawned several comic book spinoffs.

The upcoming project from Coogler, though, will seemingly be a completely “new version,” according to previous reports. Ryan Coogler, who is best known for directing the original Creed movie along with both Black Panther movies, will introduce a more diverse cast to lead the series, with The X-Files reboot set to be released under the Disney banner.
