With true crime hits like What Jennifer Did, and American Nightmare, Netflix is continuously getting viewers hooked on daunting, real events, allowing them to feel extremely close to the victims and attentively follow their stories.
One of the best true crime docu-series on Netflix, Worst Roommate Ever, has returned for a second season this year, and due to the show’s success, Blumhouse Television and Netflix teamed up for a harrowing spin-off series. Worst Ex Ever is easily one of the most shocking series on Netflix right now, as it focuses on cases in which love turned into deeply-rooted hatred, ending in vile murder. The stories that are recounted in harrowing detail are nothing short of shocking, but the major red flags make Worst Ex Ever even more terrifying. Without further ado, let’s take a look at them.
He Would Pretend to Slit Her Throat
The first episode of Worst Ex Ever really set the tone for what the Netflix series has to offer. At the center of the story is Benjamin Obadiah Foster, a young man from Oregon who is described as more of a lone wolf and someone who doesn’t enjoy being around people. However, in 2012, he met his then-girlfriend, Amber, and the two hit it off immediately. In the binge-worthy Netflix show, Amber recounts details of their relationship, saying that, in the beginning, everything seemed fine. Their connection grew stronger, and they even came to a point at which she believed they would eventually get married. Unfortunately, things took a turn when she ended up casually helping her engaged ex-boyfriend. Foster had a big issue with it and revealed that he had a jealous streak.
While their relationship turned hostile over time, there was a massive red flag in the beginning, which Amber, in hindsight, is looking at differently. Having grown up in Oregon, Foster had always been an outdoorsy person, but he also developed an intense interest in anything related to guns and knives. His deep passion even led him to bring several knives back home, showing them to Amber. While this could have been regarded as a simple hobby, how he used those knives in front of Amber is spine-chilling. Foster would take the sharp blade and playfully pretend as though he would slit Amber’s throat. Back then, Amber took his behavior as a funny joke, but seeing that he ended up at the center of the most shocking story in Worst Ex Ever because of the vile crimes he committed, talking about those interactions now sends shivers down her spine.
She Punched Him During Their Honeymoon
The true-crime docu-series also tells the story of Eric’s distressing marriage and how he almost lost his life at the hands of his own wife. Eric’s story began when he met his older colleague, Mei. Since the two of them got along very well, Mei introduced Eric to her daughter Rosa, and even though he was always rather shy, especially around women, Rosa made it easy for Eric to come out of his shell. It was clear right away that they had the same expectations for life. They wanted to get married, have children, live in a white picket-fenced house, and enjoy family life together. Well, they did get married, but after that, everything went downhill at lightning speed.
While a couple’s honeymoon is supposed to be filled with celebrating each other’s love and indulging in the time they now share together, Eric and Rosa’s post-wedding trip turned violent. Barely arrived at their destination, a fight broke out between them, leading to Rosa revealing an entirely new side of her. Fueling the heated conversation, which was more one-sided than anything else, Rosa crossed a line and punched Eric in the face. Flabbergasted by his wife’s violence, he ignored the massive red flag and moved on, as he was committed to his marriage. Unfortunately, the harassment continued after that. Rosa pressured Eric into cutting ties with his family, accused him of crimes he didn’t commit, and eventually developed an evil plan with her mother that almost cost him his daughter and his life.
She Let Him Stay in Her Basement After a Bombshell Lie
After Seemona’s father unexpectedly passed away, she felt like she couldn’t talk to anyone. When a handsome cop visited her restaurant, though, attracted to her and offered his help and ear, her world turned upside down. Their relationship was filled with laughter and support as he continued to be a helping hand in her restaurant while also following his job as a police officer and detective. However, one phone call shattered Seemona’s relationship. A woman contacted her and revealed to Seemona that Jerry was actually her husband, that they had two children together, and that he was lying about his job. Seemona, swallowing down her rage and trying to keep it civil, ended their relationship right away.
What followed after could have almost been a part of Netflix’s true crime hit Worst Roommate Ever because Jerry continued to live with her months after she broke things off with him. First and foremost, finding out he was already married and seemingly still staying at her place should have been the biggest red flag ever. Apart from that, Jerry kept his two kids a secret from Seemona, and it even turned out that he was never actually a cop or detective but just pretended to be one. Knowing that he was walking around with a gun, even though he wasn’t a real police officer, and the fact that he lied about his whole life are two major red flags. When it was time to finally return the keys to Seemona, he snapped and became violent.
Her Husband Bodyshamed Her During Pregnancy
Another story recounted in the Netflix Top 10 series is that of Amanda and her ex-husband, Kevin. Their relationship started somewhat similar to the other ones mentioned previously. They met when they were still relatively young, but they got along right away. Her family, except for her sister, who believed him to be arrogant and strange, immediately took him in. After asking Amanda’s father for permission to get married, the two tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony, and it didn’t take long until their first child was born. Two more children followed, and while Kevin, who rarely showed any affection, was mesmerized when he became a father, he let out his anger at Amanda.
During one of her pregnancies, Kevin revealed an extremely problematic side of himself, but Amanda, unfortunately, overlooked the massive red flag and played it down. He would lash out at her and constantly call her names. On numerous occasions, he would call her a crybaby and even go as far as to body shame her while pregnant. His aggressive and condescending behavior towards her reached a point where Amanda simply didn’t recognize him anymore. However, their relationship went on longer than it probably should have. When she eventually decided to get a divorce, the hostility he had built towards her led him to hire someone to kill her, but the gunman unknowingly murdered Amanda’s sister instead.
