Young Sheldon’s Upcoming Spinoff Could Retcon Another BBT Storyline

Young Sheldon’s Upcoming Spinoff Could Retcon Another BBT Storyline

Summary

  • Georgie’s new responsibilities in his upcoming spinoff set the stage for family growth and new challenges.
  • The retcon of Georgie’s marriage history in
    Big Bang Theory
may prove to be a heartwarming twist for fans.
  • The expected return of certain cast members in the spinoff opens the door for new developments and potential closure.

While many Young Sheldon fans were devastated to see the series come to an end, we all knew it was inevitable as the boy genius needed to grow up, move out of the house, and establish himself as an independent young man at Caltech University. Young Sheldon‘s finale ends with Sheldon (Iain Armitage) looking genuinely happy and saying he is “exactly where [he’s] supposed to be,” but there is much to be questioned about the rest of the Coopers back home in Texas. Missy does not seem to be coping with her anger after her father’s death. Mary has thrown herself into overdrive at the church to keep her mind off her own grief. Then there is Georgie, who is stepping up as the man of the house.

With the new Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage spinoff just right around the corner, Georgie’s stance on taking control of certain responsibilities is actually a great segue. Georgie has always wanted the best for his family, and now, with the focus on his very own tiny family, plenty of fans are excited to see what comes their way. Unfortunately, one detail from adult Sheldon’s eidetic memory in The Big Bang Theory has everyone biting at their nails and wondering how long the young couple will last. Perhaps the writers will take a note from Sheldon’s personal book and look at the new spinoff as an alternate universe where Georgie and Mandy get to live happily ever after. Here is how the Young Sheldon spinoff could (and should) retcon another Big Bang Theory storyline.

Georgie’s Marriage History According to The Big Bang Theory

Jim Parsons’ Sheldon Says That Georgie Has Two Ex-Wives

Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) has always believed in a certain “church and state” separation between his personal life back in Texas and his life in California. He actively chooses not to talk too much about his family back home for various reasons, but when he does, fans have managed to latch on and see if what the science genius says matches up with what happens in Young Sheldon. There have been a few spotty situations with some continuity errors in his memory – such as the fact he thinks his father cheated on his mother or that he had no friends while growing up – but one off-handed comment about his older brother has left fans a bit heartbroken about Georgie’s future.

During the penultimate episode of the 12th season, Sheldon casually mentions that both of his brother’s ex-wives have texted him, congratulating him on winning the Nobel Prize. He does not state their names or any slight details about how the marriages went or ended. On the surface, it seems like an afterthought to incorporate this line to take a jab at Georgie upholding his “ladies’ man” bravado, but Young Sheldon had already aired two full seasons, so this seemingly simple line could have actually been a personal hit for Sheldon’s older brother.

Young Sheldon Finale’s Huge Viewership Revealed, EP shares Insight into Delivering a Hopeful Ending to the Series

The finale of Young Sheldon has delivered a triumphant end to the seven-season story of Sheldon Cooper’s younger years.

With Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage supposed to pick up just a short time after Sheldon leaves for Caltech, many fans wonder if we are looking at another ticking time bomb of events. Emily Osment, who plays Mandy, has weighed in with her opinion. She told TVLine, “I’m hoping that I’m the ex-wife and the new wife. People get divorced and remarried. Why can’t she be both?” If this is the case, then this could overthrow The Big Bang Theory‘s storyline of Georgie’s past, but with how much fans love the young couple, would that really be such a bad thing?

Why a Change in the Georgie and Mandy Spinoff Is Ideal

Fans Don’t Want More Heartache in the New Series

While Sheldon started as the main focus of Young Sheldon, the series eventually gravitated to a more broad telling of the entire Cooper family. Georgie (Montana Jordan), the older brother who always felt like he was living in his younger brother’s shadow, finally received the recognition he deserved when he found out Mandy was pregnant. Without much hesitation, Georgie stepped up and openly said he wanted to be there for Mandy and the baby throughout everything, and the rest just fell into place. The two started living together, they got their families to get along, and most importantly, they proved to everyone what it meant to take things as they came and be grateful for what they had.

Young Sheldon EP Settles Debate Over Controversial George Affair Retcon and Why It Had to Happen

Young Sheldon executive producer Steve Holland has shared a detailed answer to why George’s cheating scandal was retconned in the series.

Fans have watched the young couple grow, make mistakes, and bounce back stronger than ever, so it makes sense that more people would rather have the Big Bang Theory storyline revised than allow Georgie and Mandy’s marriage to end. Usually, people get angry when writers retcon certain plot points, but there seems to be a consensus about wanting to keep this happy and wholesome couple together.

Which Cast Members Are Joining the Young Sheldon Spinoff?

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Is Bringing Back Certain Actors

Because Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is a spinoff and not a complete continuation of Young Sheldon, it is understandable that some characters will linger in the background or not be seen at all. Obviously, Montana Jordan and Emily Osment will be reprising their roles, but plenty of fans want to know who else they can expect to see. As of right now, Will Sasso and Rachel Bay Jones, who play Mandy’s parents, will be joining the young stars on the set, and Steve Molaro, the co-creator of Young Sheldon, says they plan to use the same babies who play Ceecee because they, as well as their parents, are so great (per Glamour).

If Meemaw (Annie Potts), Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry), and Missy Cooper (Raegan Revord) do not make it into the new series, fans at least hope that they will be mentioned so that there will be closure for all of their pain and grief. Perhaps it will be good for Georgie to distance himself from the Coopers for a while so he may focus on being the best dad and husband. Also, there is the fact that he needs to learn the family trade and become the best tire salesman in all of Dallas, of course. Young Sheldon is currently streaming on Netflix and Max.
