Zack Snyder Confirms He Will Return to Helm 300 Prequel Series

Director Zack Snyder has now confirmed that he will return to one of his best-loved franchises, 300, with the divisive filmmaker now working on a prequel TV series set in Sparta. Snyder made the revelation while speaking with Comicbook.com at the premiere of Twilight of the Gods, with Snyder comparing the project to his Netflix anime series.

“We’re just getting ready to dive in and get to work on it. It’s super fun, I love the world. And even just in the preliminary meetings we’ve had talking about, like, ‘What if this happened or that happened,’ just a lot of it’s just really fun to like go, wow, it’s a rich standard. It’s similar to this [Twilight of the Gods] in a weird way. As far as there’s a lot of underpinnings.”

Released back in 2006 and based on the 1998 comic book series of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, 300 drops audiences in 480 B.C. and is a retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae in the Greco-Persian Wars. The plot follows the king of Sparta, Leonidas (played with aplomb by Gerard Butler), as he leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. While critics at the time were mixed on the movie, it is now considered to be one of Zack Snyder’s best.

Directed by Zack Snyder, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Michael B. Gordon, 300 was audiences’ first real introduction to the use of Snyder-slow-mo and boasts a magnetic performance from Butler. The movie is now considered to be one of Snyder’s best thanks to the stylish visuals and brutal violence on display, with no fans no doubt eager to see the filmmaker return to this epic world.

Will the 300 TV Series Follow a Young Leonidas?

The news of a 300 prequel set for the small screen first emerged back in June. Plot details currently remain unknown, with prior reports saying that exact details of the story are “still being worked out.” However, it would make sense for the project to bring back the movie’s most popular character, Leonidas, following him during his early years before he became king and went to war.

While we await further details of the 300 series, Zack Snyder returns to tell the epic animated tale of the Twilight of the Gods. Created by Snyder, Eric Carrasco, and Jay Oliva, Twilight of the Gods features the voices of Sylvia Hoeks, Stuart Martin as Leif, Pilou Asbæk, Rahul Kohli, Paterson Joseph, Jamie Clayton, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen, Kristofer Hivju, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, John Noble, and Peter Stormare. You can check out the official synopsis for the series below.

“In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds and great despair, Leif, a mortal King, is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid, an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love. On their wedding night, Sigrid and Leif survive a wrath of terror from Thor, which sets them – and a crew of crusaders – on an against all odds and merciless mission for vengeance. This heroic story of love, loss and revenge, is a journey to Hell and beyond… across fantastical lands, battlefields fierce and bloody, and wars waged against Gods and demons.”
