10 TV Shows Where the Cast Didn’t Get Along Behind the Scenes

10 TV Shows Where the Cast Didn’t Get Along Behind the Scenes

Acting is, well, just that: acting. It creates a false narrative for the entertainment of the audience and makes it compelling enough for us to believe both the plot and the performances of the actors are contributing to it. Now, when on-screen talent is on a press tour, they all like to look like one big happy family, but it’s a job for them, and with any job comes the possibility of not getting along well with their co-workers.

In movies, you film for anywhere from two weeks to multiple months, depending on the size of the project. TV is a different kind of beast; if a show becomes successful, you are around a lot of the same people. Personalities can begin to clash between takes, but when the camera rolls, you will never know, at least until after the show ends and someone spills all the tea. Here are ten times when the cast of a television show didn’t get along behind the scenes.

10 Castle (2009-2016)

Castle

Release Date
March 9, 2009

Seasons
8

Studio
ABC

Lasting for a total of eight seasons, ABC’s Castle follows mystery novelist Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion), who teams up with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) to solve copycat killers from the murders in his books. The pair make a great team and decide to become a little more intimate with one another as time goes on.

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic Were Not the Best Pair Off-Screen

The chemistry between Fillion and Katic was always present on screen, but once the camera stopped rolling, they apparently couldn’t even talk to one another. Things got so bad between them that, supposedly, producers decided to send them to couples therapy even though they were only playing a couple. This sort of cast friction, as well as a grueling shooting schedule, weighed on the production, which ultimately led to its ending after eight seasons. Stream on Hulu.

9 Anger Management (2012-2014)

In the show Anger Management, Charlie Sheen plays an anger management therapist named, well, Charlie (it must be in his contract to always have that be his character’s name). He’s an ex-professional baseball player who has bounced back in life after Beiong was kicked out of the big leagues for his anger issues. He now puts his issues to good use as a therapist to help people with the same problems he has.

The Apparent Mean Text Charlie Sheen Sent Selma Blair

There is a lot of back-and-forth about why Selma Blair left the show. Sheen likes to say she was just written out all together, because the on-screen relationship didn’t fit right on screen. However, a source close to the Hollywood Reporter states that Sheen sent a text message to Selma Blair attempting to fire her, and he also called her a rather profane word. In this era of Charlie Sheen’s life, the era in which he was always “winning,” that does sound a little like something he would do. Stream on Xumo Play.

The coming-of-age drama One Tree Hill follows the lives of a group of people in Tree Hill, North Carolina. The focus of the show is between half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott, who go back and forth between half-brotherly love and rivalry. One Tree Hill was born in an era of teen dramas about love, friendship, and betrayal and what causes all of that.

Off-Screen Love Ends in Divorce

Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush played on-screen lovers who took their relationship off-screen and into real life. They took it so far off-screen that it went right up to the altar where they were married. However, the marriage did not last two long months—five months, to be exact.

Things got awkward as the show went on, and the two had to play lovers on screen again, both stating that it always felt weird doing that after getting divorced. Sophia Bush has made it clear in the press that she hates answering questions about it and does not plan to pursue a friendship with her ex-husband. Stream on Max.

Gossip Girl

Seasons

Studio
The CW

Gossip Girl follows the lives of upper-class, privileged teens on the Upper East Side of New York City. The show mainly focuses on Serena Van Der Woodson (Blake Lively), a socialite who is always at the center of attention, and her best friend Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), who falls into the background most times when she is around Serena.

Blake and Leighton Are Not Best Friends

There were never really any links to the massive drama between the show’s two leads. However, it has been said time and time again publicly by those close to the show that Blake Lively and Leighton Meester were not friends; they were friendly. People have dug and dug to see if they could get a tidbit of information about one saying something bad about the other, but it turns into rumors.

The pair played besties on screen, but it never went past that, apparently. Sources did claim that the two avoided each other a lot on set, but both actresses have mentioned there never was a feud. Lively’s PR team, however, did nothing to squash rumors, as they once stated, “Blake and Leighton have never been friends. Blake goes to work, does her job, and goes home.” Stream on Max.

6 The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (1990-1996)

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has Will Smith more or less playing a character close to himself. The show follows the character Will (Will Smith), who gets into some trouble in the street of his home neighborhood and Philadelphia, so he’s sent packing to live in the upscale world of southern California.

Aunt Viv Wanted Will Smith to Get the Cast More Money

The feud between Will Smith and Janet Hubert lasted for decades. Hurbert had an issue with Will becoming a massive star and not helping her co-stars out by getting them more money to do the show. Smith always pushed back in the press whenever she spoke her mind.

It was believed to be for some time that she was fired and replaced in her role as Aunt Viv, but at the reunion show she mentioned that she left due to being pregnant and having some issues at home, and the friction with Smith didn’t help. Hubert and Smith have made peace with one another and squashed their feud over the years. Stating that the two keep in touch regularly. Stream on Max.

Sorry Not Sorry

Co-stars Lea Michelle and Naya Rivera had a bit of a falling out throughout the years of doing the show. Rivera wrote a book called Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes, and Growing Up, in which she dished on the falling out she had with someone she once called a friend. She mentioned how she and Lea Michelle are both strong-willed and competitive, making for a bad combination when it comes to being friends. The two were apparently barely speaking as the show was wrapping up its final season. Stream on Disney+.

The original Star Trek would go on to become a piece of American pop culture for decades to come. The original series, lasting three seasons, followed the crew of the USS Enterprise, led by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), as they explored uncharted territories of space and encountered hostile and friendly alien races.

The Roast of William Shatner

There has always been a lot of back-and-forth banter about William Shatner over the years. Many of his former cast members from the show have called him a prima donna of sorts, especially his co-star, George Takei. This was on full display at the Comedy Central roast of William Shatner, as it was later found out that Takei’s harsh words towards his co-stars were not meant to be playful and joking. Takei has gone on record almost everywhere about the disdain he has for his former co-star. Stream on Paramount+.

3 Sex and the City (1998-2004)

Sex and the City is one of HBO’s greatest shows, following New York City sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw and her three friends, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. The group explores the dating scene of singles in New York and the sexual habits of people looking for love in the greatest city in the world.

Kim Cattrall’s Paycheck

It’s hard to know where Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker stand these days. Their on-screen chemistry feels so organic, but it turns out that they were never really friends. Parker has been cordial in the press, and Cattrall has said that she never really was friends with her co-star, the tone of her comments feeling a little more cold.

Cattrall was written out of the spinoff And Just Like That, but then ended up returning for a cameo as she calls Carrie over the phone from London. The fact that the two were not on-screen together made you wonder even more. Cattrall was reportedly paid a million dollars for that one small cameo. Thus bringing back rumors that this feud began over money. Stream on Max.

Undoubtedly, The X-Files is one of the greatest science fiction shows of all time. It’s fused in with a bit of police procedural tropes as it follows FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigate some of the most bizarre and outlandish cases that the government has reported as being false.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny’s Feud

Doing a show and playing opposite one another for as long as Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny did, there are bound to be a few hiccups in their relationship from time to time. The pair had serious tension between them behind the scenes that dates back to 1997. Anderson won a Golden Globe for the show but did not thank her co-star.

Duchovny won later that night and showed respect to his co-star, who looked visibly irritated. The two have been public about their tension in the past, but they buried the hatchet and made the revival series years later. Despite whatever was going on between them back in the 1990s, The X-Files always felt consistent up until the very end of the show. Stream on Hulu.

Charmed

Release Date
October 7, 1998

Seasons
8

Studio
The CW

Charmed is about three sisters who learn that they are witches. Each sister has a special power that they can use to fight against evil. Although this is an outworldly premise, it takes place in modern-day (for the time of the show) San Francisco.

Maybe the Biggest Cast Feud of All Time

Even if you have never seen a frame of the show Charmed, you are most likely aware that stars Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty have a bitter feud between them. Apparently, the working environment was so hostile that Milano threatened to sue and that they either needed to fire Doherty or she walked. All of this even got Holly Marie Combs lumped into it as she was forced to go back to the show for less pay.

Doherty was known for her bad girl reputation behind the scenes, so there is that to consider in the feud, but Milano and Doherty are still in a social media war of words as of late due to what Holly Marie Combs said on Doherty’s podcast. Let’s hope these two squash their beef for a second time, as it may just not be worth it to bicker. Shannen Doherty right now is battling cancer, and having a fight like this being so public just isn’t a good look. Stream on Prime Video.
