10 Movies You Probably Forgot Have a Post-Credit Scene

10 Movies You Probably Forgot Have a Post-Credit Scene

While it’s certain that every MCU movie will keep viewers in their seats until the end-credits in the hope of a post-credits scene, many other non-superhero movies tend to secretly deliver a final callback to the story or the characters they’ve just watched. It’s difficult to keep track of when the post-credits scene tradition started, but it was popularized by The Muppets in 1979, becoming a regular element in comedies of that time.

Before the MCU decided to deliver jaw-dropping twists in the post-credits scenes of their movies, these scenes were usually used to poke fun at viewers for staying this long at the screening or simply amuse audiences with an exciting reference, cameo, or quick jest. To this day, plenty of hilarious and creative post-credits scenes are still forgotten, even those that belong to highly successful movies. Here are 10 examples.

10 Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is remembered for a lot of things: it’s a classic high school movie, its characters are engaging and full of life, and it offers a pretty good idea of what growing up in the ’80s felt like. However, even die-hard fans tend to forget the movie has a brief post-credits scene that perfectly matches Ferris’ sardonic personality and the many instances where the character breaks the fourth wall.

In the scene, Ferris returns one last time to mock the audience, warning them that the movie is over and they should go home. The reason why the post-credits scene fell into oblivion is because it was designed for the big screen, especially for those who like to stick around until the last second of screening as if there was something else to come. Working as both a spiritual sequel and a remake, Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead was the first movie of the franchise ever since Army of Darkness, released in 1992. The film kept all the most traditional elements of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy, that is, the Necronomicon, the cabin in the woods setting, the over-the-top violence, and the lore of the demons. However, there was one element in particular that every Evil Dead fan was dying to see: Ash Williams, the iconic protagonist of the first three movies.

Aiming at bringing new fans on board the franchise, 2013’s Evil Dead opted to deliver a brand new story. In this context, all the characters in the film were introduced for the first time. To satisfy fans who were expecting a call back to the original movies, Bruce Campbell appears for a brief Ash Williams cameo in the post-credits scene, where he delivers his iconic one-liner, “Groovy.” Rent on AppleTV

8 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

It’s somewhat curious that most people seem to have missed a post-credits scene from one of the most popular franchises of all time, but such was the case with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. In the second film of the series, Harry Potter and his friends must solve the mystery of the monster that is terrorizing Hogwarts’ corridors, counting on the help of the famous wizard Gilderoy Lockhart (played by Kenneth Branagh), who turns out to be a massive fraud.

After it’s revealed that Lockhart hasn’t experienced any of the dangerous adventures he describes in his books, the wizard tries to flee and ends up losing his memory after Ron’s broken wand causes his spell to backfire. In the secret post-credits scene, Lockhart is seen wearing a straitjacket on the cover of his new book, Who Am I?, hinting that some people never change. Stream on Max

Constantine was released way before it became a recurring thing in the genre, and many fans seem to have forgotten the movie’s post-credits scene delivers a great addition to the story that was told. In Quentin Tarantino’s film, Django Unchained, a freed slave sets out on a journey of revenge, planning to get his wife back from a ruthless slave owner. Along the way, he stumbles upon all sorts of enemies and offers many slaves the chance of freedom once again. Shortly before Django’s final revenge, he strikes a deal with slave overseers, only to murder them and take their clothes and weapons, leaving three slaves at their own mercy, with their cage unlocked.

The same three slaves reappear in Django Unchained‘s post-credits scene for a few seconds, still bewildered at what they’ve seen. The scene was probably cut from the actual movie, but the decision to keep it after the credits roll turns it into a hilarious bit, almost as if those characters remained shell-shocked in their cages long after all the events that succeeded the scene. 4 Zombieland (2009)

Zombieland offers a hilarious take on the hackneyed tropes of the zombie sub-genre, playing with the cliches fans are tired of seeing in post-apocalyptic movies. What really makes it unique is the hilarious chemistry between the main characters, but one particular meta-scene stands out as the biggest highlight of the film: while exploring an empty, devastated Hollywood, the group stumbles upon Bill Murray, who plays himself in the movie.

Zombieland kills off the legendary actor in a surprising and comical twist, but viewers get to see a little more of Murray in the film’s post-credits scene. Once again blurring the lines between reality and fiction, the movie follows the character of Tallahassee trying to find the right words to say goodbye to Murray. The actor then gives him a helping head by reciting a line from the 80s comedy Caddyshack, “In the immortal words of Jean-Paul Sartre…au revoir, gopher.Stream on Tubi

3 Cloverfield (2008)

Cloverfield

Cloverfield

Release Date
January 15, 2008

Rating
PG-13

Runtime
90

Cloverfield helped popularize horror movies that don’t show the monster, following a group of New Yorkers trying to survive the attack of a skyscraper-sized monster in the city. Utilizing the found-footage trope, the constantly shaky camera barely offers viewers any time to catch a glimpse of the massive creature terrorizing the main characters, but it effectively creates a strong atmosphere of despair as they struggle to survive.

Keeping its subjective horror approach throughout its whole runtime, it comes as no surprise that Cloverfield opted for an equally subjective post-credits scene that still ignites heated debates to this day. It consists of a combination of noises and a barely perceptible sentence, which could either mean “help us” or “It’s still alive,” depending on how you hear it. Stream on Paramount+

2 Christopher Robin (2018)

A live-action Piglet, Pooh, Eeyore, and Tigger lounging on beach chairs
Walt Disney Pictures

Christopher Robin beautifully pays homage to the legacy of Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends, following Christopher Robin in his adult years as he finds himself returning to the magical world he left behind in search of his true self. The live-action is a charming ode to childhood and the elements that define us long before we get to know who we truly are.

The movie also delivers a cozy post-credits scene that pays homage to one of Disney’s most brilliant minds and Christopher Robin’s classic group of friends. In it, Richard M. Sherman, known for writing songs for earlier Winnie the Pooh movies, is seen playing a song on the piano while Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, and Piglet relax on beach chairs with sunglasses. 1 Cocaine Bear (2023)

Keri Russell and Ray Liotta Will Fight a Drug-Fueled Grizzly in Elizabeth Banks’ upcoming thriller Cocaine Bear.

Release Date
February 24, 2023

Cocaine Bear was one of 2023’s first hit action movies, but viewers slept on the two great post-credits scenes the movie delivers. They are both callbacks to smaller characters introduced at the beginning of the film, all of whom got involved in the search for a massive cocaine shipment that fell in the woods.

The first scene shows Stache hitchhiking a ride to New York on a goat truck, reluctantly leaving his bag full of cocaine in the back with the animals before hilariously retrieving it and keeping it with him, ruining the chance of a possible Cocaine Goat movie. The second scene shows Eddie reuniting with his son and realizing that their dog is chewing on his fingers. Stream on Prime Video
