Mariah Carey Says Her Mother and Sister Died on the Same Day

Mariah Carey shared on Monday that her mother and sister died on the same day last weekend.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winner told People. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Carey did not share the causes of death for either women, nor their ages. The Hollywood Reporter reached out for further comment.

In her 2020 memoir, per People, Carey wrote that her relationship with her mother, Patricia, was “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” adding that “a complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

Despite the difficulty, the singer dedicated the memoir to her mother. Also in the book, she wrote that her relationship with her sister, Alison, was tenuous and that, at the time, it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with her or her brother, Morgan.

Alison, Mariah and Morgan were the three children of Patricia and Alfred Carey, who divorced when Mariah was 3 years old. Her father was not heavily involved in her childhood, and died around 20 years ago.
