Batman’s 85th Anniversary Brings Three Classic Dark Knight Movies Back to AMC Theaters

Batman Day is September 21st, 2024, and to celebrate, AMC Theaters is offering fans a chance to see one of three Batman films on the big screen. Batman Day is an annual event held by DC Comics to celebrate the creation of Batman. It typically is marked with special Batman-themed promotions in comic book stores but has since spread to other promotional platforms. While the first Batman Day celebration in 2014 was held in July, since then, it has been on the third or fourth Saturday of September.

AMC Theaters will be doing special screenings of 1989’s Batman, 1993’s Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and 1995’s Batman Forever, which will all return to theaters for a limited time starting September 20, 2024. Fans can get reminders for when the tickets go on sale, as it is unclear if they are only for September 20th or if they will play throughout the weekend.

Batman Day

Warner Bros. seems to have big plans for Batman Day this year. In addition to the three Batman films playing at AMC theaters, the day before, on September 19th, The Penguin will debut on Max. The series is a spin-off and continuation of The Batman and will see Colin Ferrell reprise his role as Oz Cobblepott/The Penguin and set the stage for The Batman Part II. It will also be two weeks before the release of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to 2019’s Joker, which will feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

The selection of Batman movies is also interesting. 1989’s Batman by director Tim Burton was the most successful Batman movie until The Dark Knight was released. Its inclusion is likely a bit of cross-promotion as the studio also has Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which will reteam director Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, so audiences can do a double feature of Burton/Keaton if they want. Meanwhile, Batman Forever was the film that relaunched the Batman franchise after the backlash to Batman Returns. While Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was a box office disappointment, it is now considered one of the best Batman adaptations ever, and its connection to the legendary Batman: The Animated Series has made it a fan-favorite.

AMC has had a lot of recent successes in re-releasing Batman movies. Last year, in honor of Batman Day, all three entries in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy were re-released in theaters. They recently held special screenings of 2022’s The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, featuring an exclusive sneak peek at The Penguin. AMC also now has the limited edition Batman popcorn bucket that is shaped like the Bat-signal, an item that has already become a viral sensation. Fans of the Caped Crusader now have a chance to see an old favorite movie on the big screen again or finally get to see a favorite Batman movie in theaters for the first time.
