New Details on Moana 2’s Villain Revealed

The second installment of Disney’s Moana is only two months away, and the latest revelations tease a world of trouble on the horizon for the titular character. Moana 2 is set three years after the events of the first film, and a lot has changed in her life. For starters, she has a little sister, who is set to play a significant role in the movie. Also, she and Maui’s bond will continue to be featured, but the latest news about the sequel proves danger is lurking around the corner.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new villain, Nalo, is the god of storms, and is “more fearsome and powerful than anything Moana has encountered before.” This time, however, Moana will have the backing of her community as she ventures off into the unknown to tackle the latest threat. Disney’s Animation Chief Creative Officer, Jennifer Lee, commented on the conflict in store for Moana and Maui, stating:

“Nalo realizes that there’s nothing more dangerous than the power of humans. When they’re together, they can do anything. The world becomes theirs.”

No additional details about Nalo have been revealed yet. However, in addition to Nalo, several other characters are getting a spotlight in the new film.

Moana 2 Brings a New Dynamic with Moana’s Little Sister

While the first movie focused mainly on Moana and Maui with comedic relief from Hei Hei, Moana 2 features Moana’s sister, which will bring a new dynamic to the story. In the same interview, Moana 2 star Aulii’i Cravalho teased how her new sister impacts her journey.

“She has a little sister now, so that draws Moana back home. Moana is venturing out into new waters and trying to connect all of the people of the Pacific.”

Besides her little sister, viewers will also be introduced to crew members aboard the boat for her latest adventure. Joining Moana’s travels are Moni (Hualālai Chung), Kele (David Fane), and Loto (Rose Matafeo). The characters were initially created for the TV series being developed for Disney+. The course correction from the TV series event to a feature-length film forced the new faces to be stripped down and given less focus and screen time overall.

Moana is not the only character dealing with new faces, because Maui will also encounter someone from his past in the upcoming movie. Maui will cross paths with Matangi (Awhimai Fraser) and the face-off has ties to the demigod’s unsavory past.

Moana 2
releases in theaters on November 27, 2024.
