Just four days after Emily in Paris Season 4 aired its second half, Netflix announced the hit series will be returning for Season 5 with a brand new setting. Emily in Paris stars Lily Collins as an aspiring marketing executive named Emily Cooper who moves to Paris to provide an American point of view to a French marketing firm. Much of the series is about the culture shock between Emily adjusting from America to her new life in France and making new friendships and romances while in her new city. Created by Darren Star, who also created Sex and the City, Emily in Paris has been a big ratings hit for Netflix.
Netflix officially announced that Emily in Paris will return for Season 5, picking up from where Season 4 ended with Emily in Rome. Collins confirmed Season 5 on her recent appearance on Good Morning America. The Season 5 announcement came during Netflix’s Geeked Week, with many announcements being made by the streamer about some of their biggest shows and movies. The TUDUM website shared a teaser of Emily sitting on a rooftop terrace, saying, “There’s no place like Rome.” While Emily will be in a new city, the series will not change its title, and this is not expected to be a permanent change for the series, as Paris will reportedly still be a major city in the series.
The Success of Emily in Paris Defies Its Reviews
Emily in Paris debuted on Netflix on October 2, 2020. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the series was the fun light escapism that audiences had been waiting for. Despite not being a hit with critics, it became a mainstream hit. Season 2 followed on December 22, 2021, with Season 3 airing on December 21, 2022. Similar to Bridgerton and Cobra Kai, Netflix decided to split up the latest season of Emily in Paris, likely as a way to stretch out subscriptions to Netflix. Season 4 – Part 1 debuted on Netflix on August 15, 2024, with Part 2 being released on September 12, 2024.
The first half of Emily in Paris Season 4 premiered on Netflix with 9.9 million views in its first four days. It reached the Top 10 in 93 countries and has remained on the list for four consecutive weeks. With all that, it certainly is a no-brainer for Netflix to move forward with another season of the popular series. While most Netflix shows often struggle to get past three seasons, with some series like the popular Dead Boy Detectives failing to get even past one season, Emily in Paris has remained a huge hit for the streaming service despite splitting audience opinions. With popular series like Cobra Kai and Stranger Things set to close, Netflix needs some reliable titles, and Emily in Paris is certainly one of their biggest hits.
