Summary

  • Fans share their mixed reactions to Bill Skarsgård’s new take on
    The Crow,
comparing the new look to Jared Leto’s Joker.
  • Some feel the remake lacks the impact of Brandon Lee’s iconic version of the character.
  • Despite criticisms, many have faith that Skarsgård will impress in his role as The Crow in the upcoming film.

Following our first look at the remake of The Crow, which stars It and Boy Kills World star Bill Skarsgård as the gothic antihero, fans of the character have taken to social media to share their thoughts…and they’re a little mixed. Many have compared this new take on The Crow to none other than Jared Leto’s Joker, which is a comparison that nobody wants to see.

The new image from The Crow remake finds Skarsgård looking at himself in the mirror shirtless with tattoos and a little eye shadow. So, it’s easy to see why the comparison has been made. And many cannot understand why the movie and the design of the character for the remake have allowed such a comparison to happen…

Others, meanwhile, simply find it to be a lackluster attempt to create the character, especially when compared to Brandon Lee’s iteration. Still the most famous take on The Crow on the big screen, the 1994 effort was struck by tragedy when Lee was fatally wounded during filming.

The director behind the original The Crow, Alex Proyas, has also since taken to social media to share his reaction saying, “Eric Draven’s having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks.”

The Crow Fans Have Faith in Bill Skarsgård

Despite the criticisms being made following the first look, there are many who have faith that Bill Skarsgård will deliver in the comic book movie role. Known for the likes of It, John Wick: Chapter 4, Hemlock Grove, Castle Rock, and more, many have stepped in to defend the actor and cannot wait to see what he does as The Crow.

The Crow remake will be based on the 1989 comic created by James O’Barr. The story revolves around a young man named Eric, who is forced to watch his fiancée, Shelly, murdered by a gang of street thugs after their car breaks down. Eric is then shot and later dies in hospital. But he is soon resurrected by a mysterious crow and seeks vengeance on the murderers, stalking and killing them while dealing with the loss of Shelly.

Why The Crow (1994) Is So Hard to Top in the Comic Book Movie Genre

The Crow showed another side of vigilante justice that was a little more cynical, a lot more violent, but adored by millions.

Directed by Rupert Sanders from a screenplay by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider, The Crow stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, aka The Crow and FKA Twigs as Shelly Webster, as well as Isabella Wei as Zadie, Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger.

Sanders has responded to the legacy left by Brandon Lee, and believes Skarsgård is the perfect successor.

“Obviously, it was a terrible tragedy, and it’s definitely something that we’ve always had in mind through the making of the film. Brandon was an original voice and I think he will always be synonymous with The Crow and I hope he’s proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve brought the story back again. His soul is very much alive in this film. There’s a real fragility and beauty to his version of the Crow, and I think Bill feels like he is a successor to that.”

The Crow
remake is set to be released on June 7, 2024 by Lionsgate Films.
