Andrew Garfield Says He is Not in Spider-Man 4 Despite Internet Rumors

Andrew Garfield has a long history with lying to the press about his possible return to the role of Spider-Man, which makes his latest reaction to rumors that he will be slinging webs again hard to believe. The actor was recently asked about the many rumors that he will team up again with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU’s Spider-Man 4 , and in response, launched into an explanation of how everyone was being “duped” by a web of the worldwide variety.

Spider-Man: No Way Home delivered an epic multiverse adventure that exceeded fans’ expectations and box office projections to become one of Marvel Studios’ biggest hits. That means the next Spider-Man movie has a lot of pressure to become a worthy successor. According to previous reports, this has led to a lengthy delay in Holland’s next Spider-Man appearance as Marvel Studios and partner studio Sony thrash out exactly what the movie should look like.

In the meantime, rumors of where Peter Parker’s story could go next have been running wild, and that includes talk of another dip into the multiverse (while it is still possible). However, according to Garfield, fans shouldn’t really believe everything they read. Speaking to IndieWire while promoting his new movie We Live in Time at the TIFF, Garfield said:

I mean, like the internet is a big place. I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid.

Andrew Garfield Has a Long History of Denying Spider-Man Appearances

Several months before Tom Holland swung out into cinemas in Spider-Man: No Way Home, accompanied by returning former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Garfield, the latter categorically denied his involvement in the movie. When images of Garfield on a blue screen set began circulating online, the actor dismissed them as deep fakes. Even on opening weekend, when the truth of his involvement was out there for everyone to see, he still (jokingly) denied being in the movie.

With all of this in mind, any denial by Garfield of another return is hard to take seriously. However, the actor did continue to suggest that he would always be more than happy to suit up again if the right story comes along. He noted:

“I think it’s kind of endless, what can be done with that character. Not that we should; not that we will, but I think you can always find another story to tell.”

Many fans have already called for Garfield to get a third solo movie in The Amazing Spider-Man continuity, with a general belief that his run of movies came too soon. However, it is more likely that the next time we see Garfield – and Maguire – will be in Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to bring together Marvel heroes past and present from across the multiverse for one cataclysmic battle for survival.

Currently, it is unclear when Spider-Man 4 will be released, and how it will potentially fit into the current saga. With production yet to get underway, there could be a chance that Holland’s next Spider-Man movie could be released sometime between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and that would certainly increase the chances of some multiverse crossovers being a big part of the story.
